A week lets you add the neighborhoods a weekend skips and slow the pace down. Give Brickell a half-day to see Miami's financial-district skyline and Mary Brickell Village, then spend an afternoon in Downtown Miami around Bayfront Park and the Pérez Art Museum. Set aside a morning for Little Havana's Calle Ocho — Cuban coffee, cigar shops and domino players in Máximo Gómez Park — and an afternoon in Coconut Grove for its bayfront parks and a more bohemian, tree-covered pace than the rest of the city. Key Biscayne, reached via the Rickenbacker Causeway, is worth a half-day for its beaches and lighthouse if you want a quieter stretch of coast. Set aside a full day for the Everglades: airboat tours run from staging areas roughly 40 minutes to an hour from Miami Beach or Downtown, and most operators bundle round-trip transport with the ride itself. Spread nightlife across South Beach and Wynwood rather than one neighborhood — the two draw different, largely non-overlapping crowds.

South Beach & the Art Deco Historic District

South Beach is the Miami most first-time visitors picture: Ocean Drive's pastel Art Deco facades, Lincoln Road's pedestrian shopping strip and a beach that runs the length of the neighborhood. The Goodtime Hotel opened here in April 2021 on Washington Avenue, the district's original commercial spine one block back from Ocean Drive — a landmarked block of Art Deco storefronts that had never operated as a hotel before, developed by David Grutman and Pharrell Williams and now flying Marriott's Tribute Portfolio flag. It suits travelers who want to be inside the neighborhood's street-level scene, with Strawberry Moon, its pool club and restaurant, functioning as a genuine local hangout rather than a hotel-only amenity. Expect the highest hotel rates in the city here, driven by beach proximity and nightlife density.

Mid-Beach & North Beach

North of the Art Deco district, Mid-Beach and North Beach trade some of South Beach's density for quieter stretches of sand, older mid-century hotel stock and a more residential, less tourist-driven feel — Mid-Beach in particular has built a reputation for large resort-style hotels along Collins Avenue. Both are reasonable alternatives for travelers who want beach access without Ocean Drive's crowds and price premium, though public transit connections to the mainland are thinner than from South Beach. Downtown Miami

Wynwood

Wynwood is Miami's former warehouse district turned street-art destination, built around the Wynwood Walls mural park and now filled in with galleries, breweries, boutiques and a dense restaurant strip. Moxy Miami Wynwood opened in October 2024, an eight-story, ground-up building with Marriott's budget-lifestyle format — compact rooms and a second-floor social hub with a full bar — plus two restaurants from Miami hospitality group Noble 33 at street level. It puts guests inside the neighborhood's gallery and mural blocks rather than adjacent to them, a short drive from Downtown and the Design District.

Miami Design District

A few blocks north of Wynwood, the Design District trades murals and nightlife for design showrooms, flagship fashion stores and gallery-grade public art — a slower, more upscale pace built around shopping and dining rather than the beach. The Hotel at The Moore opened in October 2024, a 13-suite property inside the 1921 Moore Building, reachable only through a private members'-club floor and centered on Zaha Hadid's Elastika sculptural installation. It is a narrow, design-world-facing alternative to the larger beachfront hotels, suited to travelers drawn to the district's galleries and its Art Basel Miami Beach calendar rather than a resort stay.

Coral Gables

Coral Gables is known for Mediterranean-style architecture, tree-lined streets and landmarks like the Venetian Pool and the historic Biltmore Hotel — a formal, upscale residential city within greater Miami. Thesis Hotel Coral Gables opened in August 2020 at the meeting point of Coral Gables, South Miami and Coconut Grove, directly across from the University of Miami's main campus, with a pedestrian footbridge to a Metrorail station. It is a university-facing hotel more than a postcard-Coral-Gables one — useful for visiting families, faculty, conference and sports travelers — while still keeping the Biltmore-and-Miracle-Mile side of the neighborhood and Coconut Grove within easy reach.

Coconut Grove

Miami's oldest neighborhood, Coconut Grove is a lush, bayside pocket with a laid-back, tropical feel — bayfront parks, sailing clubs and a lower-rise, more residential streetscape than Brickell or Downtown just to its north. It suits travelers prioritizing nature and a slower pace over nightlife density, and sits close enough to Coral Gables and Brickell to reach either in minutes. Little Havana

Little Havana centers on Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street), the Cuban-exile community's commercial and cultural spine — cafecito windows, cigar shops, live music and domino games in Máximo Gómez Park. It is one of the more distinctly local experiences in Miami, worth a half-day visit even for travelers staying elsewhere in the city, but the hotel supply is limited and none of our tracked openings are located here.

Key Biscayne

Reached via the Rickenbacker Causeway from Brickell, Key Biscayne is a quieter barrier island with beaches, a historic lighthouse and a village-like, low-density feel far removed from South Beach's crowds. It works best as a half-day or full-day excursion rather than a home base for a first Miami trip, given the distance from the mainland's restaurants and nightlife.
