The place
The hotel occupies the first nine floors of 400 South Tryon, the former Wachovia Center, in the heart of Uptown Charlotte's office and financial district, with its rooftop bar rising above the surrounding skyline on the tower's 34th floor.
The concept
Spandrel Development Partners, working with 7G Group, bought the 1970s office tower, previously known as the Wachovia Center, for $36 million in April 2025 after it had gone through foreclosure, and is now converting it into a mixed-use complex with 399 apartments alongside the hotel. W Charlotte will occupy floors one through nine with 173 guest rooms, 27 suites and a signature penthouse, plus 12,000 square feet of meeting space, a ballroom and the brand's signature Living Room lobby concept. Rockwell Group is leading the interior design, drawing on Charlotte's music heritage, architecture and the work of native artist Romare Bearden, with LS3P as architect of record and CetraRuddy as conceptual design architect; the tower's curtain wall is being fully replaced with contemporary paneled glass. It is billed as Charlotte's first W Hotel.
Dining & wellness
Plans call for a ground-floor restaurant and coffee bar plus the 18,000-square-foot rooftop bar on the 34th floor, marketed as Uptown Charlotte's highest: none of the food-and-beverage concepts have been named publicly yet, as the hotel has not begun construction of its interiors.
