The place

The hotel occupies 127 North Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte, directly across from the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and a short walk from Bank of America's headquarters and the Charlotte Convention Center: a stretch of the central business district with heavy weekday and event-night footfall.

The concept

The building opened in 1924 as J.B. Ivey & Company, once the largest fashion department store in the American South, designed by architect William H. Peeps. It had never operated as a hotel until MRK Investments converted it, opening in June 2017 with guest rooms placed on the second floor above ground-floor retail and residences elsewhere in the roughly 38,000-square-foot property. The Ivey's Hotel is now the third property in the independent MRK Hotel Collection. Rooms carry reclaimed French oak flooring, bespoke furnishings and a curated art collection, styled around a Paris-meets-Southern aesthetic rather than a franchised brand identity.

Dining & wellness

5Church occupies part of the ground floor with modern American cooking from the Charlotte restaurant group of the same name; Sophia's Lounge serves shareable plates and craft cocktails in a vintage-styled room, and The Library operates as a book-lined lounge for guests. The hotel has a 24-hour fitness center but no spa or pool.
