Uptown's 1924 Johnston Building, a former office tower, is being converted into The Beckworth, a 240-room Curio Collection by Hilton hotel targeted for late 2026. Gensler and Workstead are behind the architecture and interiors, with local group Built on Hospitality running two restaurants and a rooftop bar.

The place

The hotel occupies the historic Johnston Building at 212 South Tryon Street in Uptown Charlotte, a 17-story, neoclassical office tower built in 1924 and designed by architect William Lee Stoddart — never previously used as a hotel.

The concept

The Beckworth is an adaptive-reuse conversion of the Johnston Building, gutted and rebuilt by KHP Capital Partners into a 240-room hotel joining Hilton's Curio Collection. Gensler is handling the architecture and Workstead the interiors, aiming to keep the tower's neoclassical character — ornamental facade, period proportions — while inserting a modern hotel program with meeting and ballroom space. Demolition and conversion work began in late 2024, and a general manager (Robert Hannigan) had already been appointed by January 2026 ahead of a targeted late-2026 opening, making this one of Uptown's most closely watched adaptive-reuse hotel projects. Charlotte hospitality group Built on Hospitality — known locally for The Goodyear House and Old Town Kitchen & Cocktails — will run all of the hotel's food and beverage outlets.

Dining & wellness

Plans call for a ground-floor restaurant and coffee shop, a second restaurant, and a rooftop bar, all operated by local hospitality group Built on Hospitality, alongside a 10,000-square-foot meeting area and a 3,500-square-foot ballroom.
