Architect L. Murray Dixon broke from Ocean Drive's Art Deco style for a Florida Georgian design when he built The Betsy, named for Betsy Ross, in the early 1940s; it housed American troops training on the beach during WWII, and Gloria Steinem headquartered the National Organization for Women here during the 1972 Democratic Convention.

Architect Robert Swartburg's 1947 tower, named for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became a design landmark all over again in 1995 when Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck's white-curtained, ultra-lounge reinvention helped launch South Beach's revival. Closed in 2020, the hotel reopened in 2026 with its columned entrance, terrazzo floors and signature infinity pool restored.
