The place
The hotel occupies 5–10 Great Tower Street in the City of London's Square Mile, within walking distance of the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral and eight Underground stations — Bank, Monument, Moorgate, Tower Hill and Liverpool Street among them — with the Elizabeth Line reachable at Liverpool Street. It's the second Curio Collection hotel Dominus has brought to the City, after Lost Property St Paul's.
The concept
Dominus acquired the Great Tower Street site — a former Royal Bank of Scotland building — in 2023 and converted it using what an independent review described as the same template applied to Lost Property St Paul's: retaining most of the existing structure rather than demolishing it, removing the top three floors and rebuilding them as a six-storey addition to bring the building to ten floors total, with a deliberately lowered roofline that keeps it from reading as tall from street level. The hotel takes its name and identity from the bowler hat, or 'Derby,' worn by City bankers through the Victorian and Edwardian eras, carried through in details like a Treasury Wall installation beside reception — a nod to the building's banking past, with compartments guests can unlock at check-in for small gifts. Some basement rooms are windowless, per an independent review conducted shortly after opening, which also found the hotel still finishing touches on some rooms while running at reduced capacity.
Dining & wellness
Rycrofte's Restaurant, Coffeehouse and Bar serves British cuisine overlooking the ruins of St Dunstan in the East Church Garden; the hotel also runs Mercer's Market, a monthly showcase for local artists and artisans, a daily 'Golden Hour' cocktail ritual at 5:10pm tied to the address, a 24-hour gym, two boardrooms (for 10 and 20 guests), a private dining room for up to 30 and an event space for up to 70, both overlooking the church garden.
