The Chancery Rosewood
All-suite Rosewood inside the former US Embassy building
Open · September 2025
Rosewood opened The Chancery Rosewood in Mayfair on September 1, 2025, installing 144 suites inside the former United States Embassy at Grosvenor Square. The Grade II-listed 1960 building, designed by Eero Saarinen, has been restored by Sir David Chipperfield and reworked inside by Joseph Dirand, with the original gilded eagle sculpture retained as the property's emblem. It marks Rosewood's return to London and one of the most closely watched hotel conversions of the decade.

The place
The hotel sits at 30 Grosvenor Square, the historic square at the heart of Mayfair that housed the US Embassy from 1938 until the mission relocated to Nine Elms in 2018. Bond Street, Berkeley Square and Hyde Park are all a short walk away, placing the property inside London's densest concentration of luxury retail and private members' clubs. Grosvenor Square has long been shorthand for American diplomatic history in the city, and the hotel's arrival returns a building closed to the public for decades to civic life, opening a large, once-guarded address in one of London's most exclusive postcodes to a far wider footfall.
The concept
The Chancery Rosewood occupies a Grade II-listed modernist landmark designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1960 as the United States Embassy — a Cold War-era building whose facade is dominated by a gilded eagle sculpture, reportedly cast from aluminum salvaged from a decommissioned B-52 bomber, which Rosewood has kept as the hotel's signature emblem. British architect Sir David Chipperfield led an eight-year restoration reported at roughly £1 billion, adding a sixth storey and two set-back rooftop levels finished in gold-toned metal, a move said to draw on Saarinen's own unrealized sketches for the original building. French interior architect Joseph Dirand designed the 144 suites and the hotel's public spaces, pairing Chipperfield's bold, wide-span geometry with warm materials and gold-anodized aluminum detailing. All 144 keys are suites, ranging from roughly 570-square-foot Junior Suites up to six two-story Houses of as much as 4,337 square feet, including two named penthouses, Charles House and Elizabeth House, set within the added upper floors. The scale and the diplomatic backstory position the property as a flagship for Rosewood in Europe and a rare case of a former government building converted into a hotel at this level of ambition, aimed at guests drawn as much to the building's history as to its Mayfair address.
Dining & wellness
Dining spans six outlets, anchored by the European debut of New York's Carbone alongside Serra, serving Southern Mediterranean cuisine, and Tobi Masa, a Japanese restaurant from chef Masayoshi Takayama. Jacqueline is a tearoom and dessert salon overseen by executive pastry chef Marius Dufay, GSQ operates as a neighborhood delicatessen, and Eagle Bar occupies the rooftop beneath the original eagle sculpture with a vinyl-curated music program. Underground, the roughly 1,119-square-meter Asaya Spa includes a 25-meter pool, five treatment rooms, a Technogym-equipped fitness center, sauna, steam room and cold plunge, plus the Taktouk Clinic, a dermatology practice run by Dr. Wassim Taktouk.
