The place
The hotel stands on Great Scotland Yard, just off Whitehall in the City of Westminster. Parliament is a few steps away and Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden are within walking distance.
The street gave the Metropolitan Police its popular name, and the building is tied to that history rather than to the usual hotel districts of Mayfair or Knightsbridge.
The concept
The building was never open to the public before the conversion. Hyatt's release describes it as the historical home of law and order in Westminster, and ties it to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and to the poster campaign in which Lord Kitchener told First World War recruits that their country needed them. Dating differs between sources: the Edwardian facade is placed in 1906 by some and 1910 by others, and the interior was gutted for the hotel.
Twenty14 Holdings bought the site in 2015 for a reported £110 million and spent a further £50 million on the conversion. It opened in December 2019 as the UK debut of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt.
Interiors are credited to HBA. The rooms use a neutral palette with patterns drawn from the building's past, wardrobes concealed behind a bookcase-style front and robe hooks shaped like keys.
No1 Great Scotland Yard is a separate five-story, two-bedroom townhouse beside the main building. Grace and Favour, a members' space on the lower levels, is set up for work, socializing and events.
Dining & wellness
The Yard is the main restaurant, with modern British cooking from an open kitchen. The 40 Elephants is the cocktail bar, The Parlour serves coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea in the daytime, and Sibín is a speakeasy behind a hidden door, known for whiskey and food pairings.
Chef Robin Gill was credited with the food and drink concepts at launch. Sources diverge on who runs the kitchen today, with one guide naming Niklas Ekstedt for the restaurant.
The hotel has a 24-hour fitness center.
