The Ned
Lutyens' Grade I-listed Midland Bank headquarters at 27 Poultry became a 252-room hotel and members' club in 2017, after more than a decade empty.
Open · 2017
The former head office of Midland Bank, once the largest bank in the world, opened as a hotel in 2017 after standing vacant for over a decade. Soho House founder Nick Jones and Andrew Zobler of Sydell Group oversaw the conversion of the Edwin Lutyens building into 252 bedrooms, a members' club and a dining floor set in the old banking hall. It had never been a hotel before. The Portland stone building at 27 Poultry is Grade I listed, and the restoration kept much of what the bank left behind.

The place
27 Poultry sits in the City of London, close to the Bank of England and facing James Stirling's No 1 Poultry across the street. Bank station is opposite.
This is a working financial district. Office towers, old livery halls and the Bank of England museum are the neighbours, and the hotel's rooftop looks over St Paul's Cathedral, The Shard and the Rothschild Bank headquarters designed by OMA. Weekends are quieter than weekdays here, which suits a stay built around the building itself.
The concept
Edwin Lutyens, born in 1869 and best known for country houses, war memorials and his part in the planning of New Delhi, designed the headquarters in 1924. It was completed in 1939 for Midland Bank. The brand disappeared after HSBC took the bank over in 1992, and the building stood empty for more than ten years before a group that included Soho House chairman Ron Burkle bought it.
Soho House's own habit is to favour a retro look over a contemporary one. Nick Jones has said comfort matters most, and that he wants rooms to have atmosphere even when nobody is in them. That explains the bedrooms: original walnut panelling and chandeliers were restored, and they are furnished with brass and mahogany pieces, hand-knotted rugs, rainforest showers and vintage items that refer to the 1920s and 1930s.
The banking hall is the centrepiece. It covers about 3,000 square metres, and its 92 columns of African verdite divide the space between rows of walnut banking counters. The old strongroom is now a cocktail bar lined with 3,800 safety deposit boxes, reached through a circular door two metres wide that weighs 20 tonnes. Nick Jones calls it the ultimate lock-in bar.
The event rooms are in the same register. One is a saloon under an 18th-century chandelier. Another is panelled in walnut and hung with a pastoral tapestry that was, when it was made in England in the 1920s, the largest of its kind.
Dining & wellness
The banking hall holds most of the restaurants, serving cuisines from several countries. Counts vary between sources, from seven restaurants and three bars to nine restaurants in total, so the exact tally depends on how the rooftop and club venues are counted. Cecconi's, Italian, and Kaia, which serves sushi and robata, are among the named addresses.
On the roof there is a heated pool and bar, with the London skyline as backdrop. The club side adds a spa with a hammam, a gym and a late-night lounge bar, and Ned's Club Spa includes a 20-metre indoor pool, a sauna and a steam room. Men's and women's grooming services complete the offer.
