Built as the Crutchfield House in 1847 and renamed the Read House in 1872, the hotel was rebuilt in 1926 into a ten-story, 400-room landmark modeled on Chicago's Palmer House. Its guest registry has included Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, Winston Churchill and Elvis Presley, and it has held a spot on the National Register of Historic Places since 1976.
