The mountain
Breckenridge Ski Resort opened in 1961 on what is now called Peak 8 and has since expanded across five interconnected peaks — Peaks 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The resort's base sits at 9,600 feet, among the highest base elevations of any major Colorado resort, rising to a summit of 12,998 feet for a vertical drop of 3,398 feet across roughly 2,908 skiable acres. The Imperial Express chairlift on Peak 8 is the highest chairlift in North America, accessing terrain above 12,800 feet.
The town
Breckenridge was founded in 1859 after gold was discovered along the Blue River, and its Main Street preserves the largest historic district in Colorado — more than 200 buildings dating to the 1880s mining boom, now painted in the town's signature candy-colored palette and filled with restaurants, galleries and shops rather than saloons. The town sits in Summit County, about 80 miles west of Denver via Interstate 70, and functions as the county seat. Lodging and dining cluster both along historic Main Street downtown and at the separate base areas serving Peaks 7, 8 and 9. Year-round population is around 5,000, a fraction of the visitors the resort draws each ski season.
What to do
Skiing and riding across the resort's five peaks is the main draw in winter, from Peak 9's beginner-friendly terrain to Peak 6's high-alpine bowls. In summer, the same lift network opens for hiking and mountain biking, and Main Street's Victorian storefronts stay busy with shops, breweries and restaurants year-round. The Breckenridge Nordic Center and a well-regarded network of cross-country and snowshoe trails extend the winter season beyond the downhill terrain.

Denver International Airport (DEN) is the primary gateway, roughly 100 miles and about an hour and a half to two hours away via Interstate 70 — longer during winter storms or peak weekend traffic through the mountain corridor.
