New hotels in Big Sky

For most of its history Big Sky was the quiet cousin: more skiable acreage than anywhere else in the United States, an hour from Bozeman, and almost none of the branded luxury that had long since arrived in Jackson Hole and Aspen. Its growth ran through private clubs and residential lots, the members-only Yellowstone Club sits just across the ridge, rather than through hotels anyone could book.

Three openings changed that in five years. Montage Big Sky arrived first, on 15 December 2021, a $400 million ski-in resort at the heart of the Spanish Peaks Mountain Club and, at over 500,000 square feet, the largest building in Montana. One&Only Moonlight Basin followed in November 2025: the first One&Only in the United States and, more significantly, the first mountain resort the brand has built anywhere in the world, after four decades of beaches and islands. And in July 2025 Gravity Haus Big Sky took over the old River Rock Lodge in Town Center and reopened it as a members' clubhouse with 29 rooms, which is the closest thing the valley now has to an affordable answer.

That last point matters. With the Montage starting around $750 a night out of season and the One&Only around $1,075, Big Sky's problem is no longer a shortage of luxury.

Winter

Boyne Resorts' Big Sky Resort claims the largest skiable acreage of any single resort in the United States: 5,850 acres served by 40 lifts, with a 4,350-foot vertical drop from the 11,166-foot summit of Lone Peak to the valley floor. The terrain splits roughly 60% advanced and 25% intermediate, and the Lone Peak Tram carries skiers to the summit for some of the steepest lift-served skiing in the country; beginners and families generally stay on the gentler runs around Andesite Mountain.

Summer

The Lone Peak Tram keeps running for scenic rides, and the resort adds a bike park with lift-served trails. Ousel Falls, a short family hike along the West Fork Gallatin River, is minutes from Town Center, and the Gallatin itself is one of Montana's best-known fly-fishing and whitewater rivers, running alongside US-191 the length of the canyon. Yellowstone National Park's West Entrance, in West Yellowstone, is about an hour south and a common day trip.

Moonlight Basin

The resort's northern flank, merged into Big Sky Resort's terrain in 2013, with its own base area and a quieter, more residential feel than Mountain Village. One&Only Moonlight Basin sits on 240 acres inside the private community here, bordered by more than 17,000 acres of permanently protected land, with a heated gondola that reaches Big Sky Resort's Madison Base in five minutes.

Spanish Peaks

A private club community on the southern side of the mountain, and where Montage Big Sky sits, with ski-in and ski-out access to the resort in winter and the Spanish Peaks golf course in summer.

Mountain Village

The ski-in, ski-out base area at the foot of the lifts, with the resort's main lodges, restaurants and the Lone Peak Tram terminal, where visitors who prioritise direct slope access above all else look to stay.

Town Center

About seven miles and a ten-minute drive from the resort base, Town Center is Big Sky's walkable commercial hub, with restaurants, shops and a year-round events lawn. Gravity Haus Big Sky is here, in the former River Rock Lodge.

Meadow Village

Between Town Center and the highway, a quieter, more residential pocket with its own smaller retail cluster: a practical base for longer stays.

One&Only Moonlight Basin is 92 keys spread across 240 acres, which is an extraordinary lack of density. Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig designed it low and among the trees, with dark metal rooflines borrowed from local agricultural buildings and stone and timber quarried nearby; the rooms and suites sit in three lodges, with nineteen freestanding cabins in the forest, each with a private soaking tub and fire pit. Five food and drink outlets include Wildwood, the ranch-to-table room, a Montana outpost of Michelin-starred Akira Back, and Moonshack, a speakeasy cabin in the woods. The spa runs to 17,000 square feet.

Gravity Haus Big Sky is the outlier and the valley's only real mid-market option, run by a Colorado outfit that pairs hotels with a monthly membership club across mountain towns from Vail to Revelstoke. Twenty-nine pet-friendly rooms sit above the Terrain Taco taqueria and Unravel Coffee, alongside a sauna, cold plunge, hot tub and a coworking floor.
