Hotel Captain Cook

Opened 1965 · Post-earthquake landmark

Businessman and future Alaska governor Wally Hickel built the Captain Cook on Fourth Avenue as a deliberate act of confidence in Anchorage's recovery after the catastrophic 1964 earthquake, choosing a site near one of the city's worst landslides. Towers added in 1972 and 1978 grew it into the full city block it occupies today.

Historic Anchorage Hotel

Anchorage's original hotel opened in 1916, the same year the city itself was founded, and was expanded in 1936 with a Gothic-style annex by architect E. Ellsworth Sedille, one of the tallest buildings in Anchorage at the time. Guests have included President Warren Harding and Walt Disney — aviator Wiley Post and humorist Will Rogers stayed here only two days before the 1935 plane crash that killed them both.
