New hotels in Mammoth Lakes

Mammoth Lakes sits on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada in Inyo National Forest, built around Mammoth Mountain, one of the highest and snowiest ski resorts in California. The mountain has a 3,100-foot vertical drop from its 11,059-foot summit to a base elevation of 7,953 feet, spreads across 3,500 skiable acres with 178 trails and 24 lifts, and averages roughly 400 inches of snowfall a year: enough that the season regularly runs from November into June.

The town's lodging has been condominium stock for decades, and that is only now starting to change. Limelight Mammoth opened in December 2025 on Lake Mary Road, a few steps from The Village at Mammoth and its gondola: 149 rooms and suites plus 15 residences, and the first California hotel from Aspen One's Limelight brand. A second project, a 101-room Residence Inn by Marriott Mammoth Lakes, has been under construction in the North Village since its building permit was issued in October 2025, with no opening date announced by either Marriott or the developer.

Winter

Mammoth's long season and consistent snowfall make it one of the few California resorts with reliable late-spring skiing. Alterra Mountain Company, which owns the mountain, includes it on the Ikon Pass alongside sister resort June Mountain about 20 minutes away.

Summer

Once the snow softens, the Mammoth Lakes Basin (Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake George and Horseshoe Lake among them) opens up for hiking, fishing and paddling a short drive from town. Devils Postpile National Monument, about 40 minutes away, protects an unusual formation of tall, symmetrical basalt columns reachable by an easy hiking trail. The June Lake Loop, a 16-mile scenic drive past four lakes ringed by peaks over 12,000 feet, makes an easy half-day trip, and Hot Creek and other geothermal springs nearby draw soakers year-round.

For now the choice is straightforward: Limelight Mammoth is the only tracked property open, and its position beside the Village Gondola is about as close to the lifts as the village allows. It runs a single all-day venue, the Limelight Lounge, with included breakfast, a heated outdoor pool and hot tub, firepits and a members' club: an informal, family- and dog-friendly format rather than a full-service resort, and there is no spa. The Residence Inn under construction opposite will be an extended-stay building with kitchens in the rooms, better suited to week-long self-catering stays, but nothing about its schedule or its management has been published yet.
