New hotels in Destin

Destin sits on Florida's Panhandle, a narrow strip of land between the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay, connected to the rest of the Emerald Coast by East Pass. Long known as "the world's luckiest fishing village," it built its reputation on one of the largest charter-fishing fleets on the Gulf and on quartz-sand beaches so white they read almost as snow in photographs. Where to stay

Destin's beachfront is almost entirely condominiums and holiday rentals, so purpose-built hotels are the exception here. The three tracked below sit in three different relationships to the water.

The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa is the only one on the Gulf, open since November 2016 beside Henderson Beach State Park: the park is what makes the setting work, keeping the shoreline next door undeveloped. It launched as a Salamander resort and has changed owner and manager since without picking up a new flag. Expect a resort fee on top of the rate, and conference groups outside high summer.

Hyatt House Destin opened in June 2026 at Regatta Bay, on the bay side of US Highway 98 beside the Destin Commons shopping centre. It is the first purpose-built hotel to complete inside the city limits in several years, and 97 of its 146 keys are apartment-style suites with full kitchens: an answer to a market where the default booking is a condominium.

Drury Plaza Hotel Destin is not built. The city council approved the six-storey, 320-room scheme at 1001 US Highway 98 East, beside Big Kahuna's water park, after a divided hearing on tree removal, traffic and parking, with conditions attached on native replanting and a pet relief area. Councillors used the vote to say the town's land development code had not kept pace with the projects reaching it. Drury will break ground in 2026 but has published no opening date.

Several hotels marketed under the Destin name are not in Destin: Miramar Beach and Sandestin lie in Walton County, the town itself in Okaloosa County. This page covers Destin proper.

What to do

A weekend in Destin

Start at HarborWalk Village, the boardwalk and marina complex on Destin Harbor that anchors the town's waterfront, for lunch and a look at the day's catch coming in from charter boats. From there, a short boat ride out to Crab Island (a shallow, tide-exposed sandbar inside the bay lined with floating cantinas, slides and music on summer weekends) makes for an easy afternoon on the water. Spend the following morning at Henderson Beach State Park, a protected 6,000-foot stretch of the same quartz sand without the crowds or development of the open beach, then return to HarborWalk for the nightly sunset and fireworks in high season.

A full week

A longer stay leaves room to add Big Kahuna's Water & Adventure Park for a day built around kids, and Destin Commons, an open-air shopping and dining complex, for an evening off the beach. Book a half-day or full-day deep-sea fishing charter out of the harbor (the fleet targets red snapper, grouper and mahi-mahi depending on season) and set aside an afternoon to drive east on Scenic Highway 30A toward Seaside, Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach, a string of planned beach towns with a markedly different, walkable architecture from Destin itself.

Areas of Destin

HarborWalk & Destin Harbor

The town's tourist and dining core, centered on the boardwalk along Destin Harbor and the marinas that run the charter-fishing and Crab Island boat trips. It's the most walkable base for evening entertainment and the departure point for most water excursions.

Holiday Isle & Crystal Beach

A narrower stretch just east of the harbor and pass, mixing beachfront condos with a quieter residential feel than HarborWalk, still within a short walk or drive of the harbor's restaurants.

Miramar Beach & Sandestin

East of Destin proper and across the county line in Walton County, Miramar Beach and the larger Sandestin resort community extend the same quartz-sand coastline with a lower-key, more residential pace, anchored by Sandestin's Baytowne Wharf entertainment district.

Henderson Beach & Regatta Bay

West and inland of the main tourist strip, this area centers on Henderson Beach State Park's protected shoreline and quieter, golf-course-adjacent neighborhoods away from the harbor's foot traffic. Both of Destin's open tracked hotels are here: one on the beach beside the park, one inland at Regatta Bay.
