The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa

The Henderson Beach Resort & Spa opened on 17 November 2016 as a new-build luxury resort on the Gulf shoreline at the eastern edge of Destin, hard against the protected dunes of Henderson Beach State Park. Launched as The Henderson, a Salamander Beach & Spa Resort and since passed to DiamondRock Hospitality as owner and Aimbridge Hospitality as manager, the 170-key property carries no hotel brand today. It remains the only resort of its grade in the town, with a spa, a lazy river and roughly 40,000 square feet of meeting space.

The place

The resort occupies 200 Henderson Resort Way, on the Gulf of Mexico shoreline at the eastern end of Destin, immediately adjacent to Henderson Beach State Park. The state park is the reason the setting works: it protects more than a kilometre of dune and sea-oat coastline from further development, so the resort looks out over undeveloped shore rather than the wall of condominium towers that defines most of Destin's beachfront. The town's harbour, its charter-fishing fleet and the HarborWalk restaurants are a short drive west along US Highway 98.

The concept

The Henderson opened on 17 November 2016 as a ground-up construction by Dunavant Enterprises, and it arrived under a name that no longer applies: at launch it was The Henderson, a Salamander Beach & Spa Resort, operated by Salamander Hotels & Resorts, the company founded by Sheila Johnson. Ownership and management have both changed since — DiamondRock Hospitality acquired the 170-key property, and day-to-day operations sit with Aimbridge Hospitality — but none of those names is a consumer-facing hotel brand, and the resort today flies no flag. It trades purely on its own name, which is why this guide records it as independent rather than attaching it to a group a guest would never see. The building is scaled as a full resort rather than a boutique property: roughly 40,000 square feet of meeting and event space, a lazy river, separate family and adult swimming pools, and a spa. That conference capacity is unusual for the Emerald Coast and explains much of the resort's shoulder-season business, in a market otherwise dominated by summer family holidays. A later addition, The Lofts, extended the accommodation offer beyond the original room count. The resort still describes itself as the only luxury resort in Destin, a claim that is difficult to contest given how little competition of that grade the town has.
