Newport Harbor is one of the largest recreational small-boat harbors on the West Coast, sheltering thousands of private boats behind the narrow sandbar of the Balboa Peninsula. Balboa Island, a small man-made island inside the harbor reached by a short car bridge or the Balboa Island Ferry, is dense with narrow lanes, waterfront homes and a walkable main street known for its frozen bananas and saltwater taffy. Lido Isle, another residential island just north, adds more of the same low-key, boat-oriented character.

Beaches

The Balboa Peninsula carries two piers, Newport Pier to the north and Balboa Pier to the south, both flanked by wide public beach and a paved boardwalk popular with cyclists. At the peninsula's southern tip, the Wedge is one of the best-known — and most dangerous — bodysurfing spots in the country, generated by waves bouncing off the harbor jetty. Corona del Mar State Beach, on the city's southeastern edge, adds tide pools and calmer water at Little Corona, with Crystal Cove State Park's undeveloped coastline just beyond it.

Fashion Island and inland Newport

Fashion Island, an open-air shopping center a short drive from the coast, anchors the city's retail and dining scene away from the beach, with views out over Newport Harbor from its upper level. The surrounding Newport Center area is the city's business district, distinct from the beach-town feel of the peninsula and islands.

Getting there

John Wayne Airport, Orange County's main airport, sits about 15 to 20 minutes inland, making Newport Beach one of the more convenient Southern California beach towns to fly into directly. By car, it's roughly 45 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles via the 405 and 55 freeways or along PCH, traffic depending.
