Midtown is where New York keeps its offices, its big stations and most of its hotel rooms. For this guide it runs from the NoMad blocks around 28th Street up to 59th Street, where Central Park begins, and from the Hudson River east past Park Avenue. Twenty of the openings we follow in New York fall inside that box, more than in any other part of the city. Seven opened between 2021 and 2023, as Manhattan came out of the pandemic, three more in 2026, and the other ten are still conversions, towers under construction or plans.

It is not one neighborhood. A room on West 28th Street and a room on East 53rd Street are 25 blocks apart, a good 25-minute walk, and an avenue block east to west is roughly three times the length of a street block north to south. The guide below sorts the hotels by sector, from south to north and then west. Times Square and the Theater District, in the western middle of Midtown, have their own pages: the Times Square guide and the Theater District guide cover the billboard blocks and the Broadway houses, so they are only touched on here.

Getting in and around

Grand Central Terminal, at 42nd Street and Park Avenue, is the hub of the east side. The 4, 5, 6 and 7 subway lines and the shuttle to Times Square stop there, Metro-North trains leave for the Hudson Valley and Connecticut, and since January 25, 2023 the Long Island Rail Road has run into Grand Central Madison, a new station dug about 150 feet below street level. On the west side, Penn Station and the Moynihan Train Hall, opened in 2021 in the old post office across Eighth Avenue, handle Amtrak, the LIRR and New Jersey Transit.

The 7 line was extended to 34 St–Hudson Yards in 2015, which is what made the Far West Side usable without a long walk from Eighth Avenue. For Rockefeller Center, the B, D, F and M stop at 47–50 Sts–Rockefeller Center on Sixth Avenue; for Fifth Avenue's northern end, the N, R and W stop at 5 Av/59 St.

NoMad and the Flatiron edge

The southern end of Midtown is its newest hotel cluster. NoMad, short for North of Madison Square Park, covers roughly 25th to 30th Street around Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The Flatiron Building (1902) and Madison Square Park sit at its southern tip, Koreatown's barbecue restaurants fill West 32nd Street just north, and the Empire State Building stands at Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. The R and W stop at 28th Street on Broadway, the 6 at 28th Street on Park Avenue.

Three opened hotels share a few hundred yards of this grid, and all three are expensive. The Fifth Avenue Hotel, at 1 West 28th Street, opened in October 2023 in a landmarked 1907 McKim, Mead & White building that had been a bank and never a hotel, with a new 24-story glass tower rising behind it. It has 153 rooms, maximalist interiors by Martin Brudnizki and Andrew Carmellini's Café Carmellini; rooms start around $1,350. Half a block west, at 25 West 28th Street, the Ritz-Carlton New York, NoMad opened in July 2022 in a 50-story new-build tower, with 250 rooms and suites, 16 residences above them and a dining program by José Andrés, from about $1,000 a night.

Virgin Hotels New York is the louder neighbor. It took the whole Broadway block between 29th and 30th Streets in February 2023 with 460 rooms, a red staircase in the lobby and a rooftop pool club, and its rooms start around $350.

Soho House has also announced Soho House Flatiron, its fourth and largest Manhattan house, with hotel rooms, a health club and a rooftop terrace. Construction is targeted to start in 2027; no address, room count or opening date has been published.

Herald Square, Hudson Yards and Manhattan West

West of Fifth Avenue, the high 20s and low 30s are garment-district lofts and chain stores around Herald Square, where Macy's fills the block at 34th Street and Broadway. Ruby New York City is converting an 18-story office building from the 1930s on Avenue of the Americas, near the square, into the first Manhattan hotel of the German micro-room brand: 187 rooms, announced for 2027.

Hudson Yards and Manhattan West, between Ninth Avenue and the river from about 30th to 37th Street, are built over the rail yards that feed Penn Station. The towers went up in the 2010s and early 2020s. The High Line ends here at 34th Street, the Edge observation deck sits on the 100th floor of 30 Hudson Yards, and the Javits Center fills the blocks west of Eleventh Avenue.

Pendry Manhattan West opened in September 2021 at the base of Four Manhattan West, between Ninth and Tenth Avenues: 164 rooms in a building by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with interiors by Gachot Studios, from about $630. Moynihan Train Hall is a five-minute walk away, which makes it the practical choice for anyone arriving by Amtrak from Boston or Washington.

A few blocks north, Hotel Meta is a 51-story, 379-room Tribute Portfolio tower at 450 Eleventh Avenue and West 37th Street, across from the Javits Center and facing the Hudson. The building is structurally near complete after a 2024 refinancing and a change of brand, but the early-2026 opening the developer had targeted has passed and no date is confirmed.

Grand Central, Bryant Park and the 40s

Around Grand Central, Midtown is offices at their densest. The Chrysler Building (1930) stands at Lexington Avenue and 42nd Street, One Vanderbilt and its Summit observation deck rise beside the terminal, and the main branch of the New York Public Library faces Fifth Avenue at 42nd Street, with Bryant Park behind it and a skating rink there in winter. The Morgan Library & Museum is at Madison Avenue and 36th Street. Inside the terminal, opened in February 1913, the low tiled vault in front of the Oyster Bar (which opened the same month) is the whispering gallery: stand in one corner, face the wall, and someone in the opposite corner hears you.

Four blocks south of the terminal, the Kimpton Ashbel opened in 2026 in the 1928 limestone building at 70 Park Avenue, long the Doral Park Avenue Hotel. It has 205 rooms with interiors by Busta Studio and launches IHG's Ashbel label for landmark hotel buildings. Rates start around $250, low for Park Avenue.

West of Sixth Avenue, two older buildings are being turned into hotels a block apart. The Wolseley Hotel New York will put 76 rooms into the landmarked 1905 clubhouse of the Lambs, America's first professional theatrical club, at 130 West 44th Street; it is the first hotel of the brand Minor Hotels is building around the London brasserie, due in early 2027. Only YOU Hotel New York, at 125 West 45th Street, is converting a 1928 office building into 138 rooms with interiors by Lázaro Rosa-Violán and a rooftop bar, Palladium Hotel Group's first US address, due in the fourth quarter of 2026. Both are two minutes from Times Square and three from Bryant Park.

Margaritaville Resort Times Square carries Times Square in its name but stands at Seventh Avenue and West 40th Street, a block south of the square and a block and a half from Bryant Park. The 32-story island-themed tower opened in July 2021, with rates from about $290.

Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue

This is the Midtown of postcards: Rockefeller Center with its sunken plaza, its winter rink, its Christmas tree and the Top of the Rock deck at 30 Rockefeller Plaza; Radio City Music Hall on Sixth Avenue at 50th Street; St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue at 50th; the Museum of Modern Art on West 53rd Street; and the flagship stores up Fifth Avenue to 57th Street.

Two hotels sit in or beside the complex. The Nell New York, the Little Nell's first hotel outside Aspen, is a 134-room conversion of ten floors of 10 Rockefeller Plaza, above NBC's Today show studio, and will be the first and only hotel inside Rockefeller Center. Guests will check in on the seventh floor, Rockwell Group and Pierre & Co are designing it, and the opening has moved to fall 2027. Kimpton Era Midtown New York opened on March 11, 2026 in a new 33-story Extell tower at 32 West 48th Street, a block from the plaza: 529 rooms, interiors by INC Architecture & Design, rates from about $450, and restaurants and bars opening in phases, a rooftop izakaya among them.

At the top of the retail strip, Aman New York occupies the Crown Building, the 1921 Beaux-Arts tower at 730 Fifth Avenue and 57th Street that held the first home of the Museum of Modern Art. It opened in August 2022 with 83 rooms, and its rates, from about $1,700, are the highest of the twenty. The park is two blocks north, which is why the hotel also appears on our Central Park page.

Four blocks south and one avenue east, The Lowell Modern is the least advanced project of the group. The Chartouni family, who own the Lowell Hotel on the Upper East Side, plan to turn a 1960s office tower at 509 Madison Avenue and East 53rd Street into a 96-room companion hotel, adding nine floors and a glass facade. The City Planning Commission approved it in February 2026; no construction start or opening date has been announced.

The West Side: around Times Square and Hell's Kitchen

The largest projects in Midtown are on blocks the Times Square and Theater District pages cover in detail, so only the facts here. Hard Rock Hotel New York, at 159 West 48th Street, opened in April 2022 with 446 rooms and a 34th-floor rooftop bar, from about $220. voco Times Square: Broadway, at Seventh Avenue and 48th Street, opened in February 2026 with 419 rooms and the Velvet Fox rooftop bar; it is IHG's largest voco in the Americas, and its rates, from about $200, are the lowest of any hotel we follow in Midtown.

Two towers are still rising. RIU Plaza New York, 54 stories and 673 rooms at Broadway and West 54th Street, passed the halfway mark in spring 2026 and is tracking toward completion in 2027. The Torch, Extell's 52-story tower at 740 Eighth Avenue, will put an 825-room hotel under a public observation deck, a drop ride and a glass spire; construction was past the halfway point by August 2026, but no hotel brand or opening date has been named.

Hell's Kitchen runs west from Eighth Avenue to the Hudson, with Ninth Avenue as its restaurant street. Ink 48, MGallery Collection is an existing hotel with a new name coming: Accor is converting the 222-room Ink48, near the river, into the US flagship of its MGallery Collection for 2028, and the hotel keeps operating in the meantime under Rebel Hotel Company.

Which Midtown hotel for which trip

If you arrive by train, the station decides. Pendry Manhattan West is five minutes from Moynihan Train Hall, and the Kimpton Ashbel is four blocks from Grand Central for Metro-North and the Long Island Rail Road.

For a first visit built around the sights, Kimpton Era Midtown puts Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's and MoMA within a ten-minute walk, with the Broadway theaters a few blocks west.

The expensive end splits in two. The Aman sits at the park end of Fifth Avenue, among the flagship stores; the Fifth Avenue Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton in NoMad suit travelers whose evenings revolve around restaurants rather than shopping.

On a tighter budget, the voco and the Hard Rock publish the lowest rates, at the price of Times Square crowds outside the door. The Kimpton Ashbel, from about $250, is quieter.

Frequently asked questions

Which Midtown hotels opened most recently?

Kimpton Era Midtown New York, on March 11, 2026, and voco Times Square: Broadway, in February 2026. The Kimpton Ashbel on Park Avenue also opened in 2026.

Is there a hotel inside Rockefeller Center?

Not yet. The Nell New York, on ten floors of 10 Rockefeller Plaza, will be the first, with its opening now planned for fall 2027.

How far is Midtown from Central Park?

Zero blocks at its northern edge, since Midtown ends at 59th Street, where the park begins. From Grand Central it is about 17 blocks, some 20 minutes on foot up Madison or Fifth Avenue; from NoMad, closer to half an hour, or a few stops on the R or W to 5 Av/59 St.

Is NoMad part of Midtown?

Partly. New Yorkers often call the blocks between 23rd and 34th Streets Midtown South, and NoMad is the part of it around Broadway and Fifth Avenue, between Madison Square Park and the Empire State Building. For the blocks to the west, see our Chelsea guide.

Is it cheaper to stay near Times Square or near Rockefeller Center?

Near Times Square, going by starting rates: about $200 at the voco and $220 at the Hard Rock, against about $450 at Kimpton Era Midtown by Rockefeller Center. Real prices move a lot with dates and events.
