Chelsea covers Manhattan's West Side from 14th Street up to the West 30s, between Sixth Avenue and the Hudson River. On the ground it splits in two. West of Ninth Avenue are the converted warehouses, the galleries of the West 20s, the High Line and the piers. East of Eighth Avenue, toward Sixth, the blocks fill with offices, loft buildings, chain stores and the wholesale flower sellers of West 28th Street. Our two tracked openings stand one on each side, roughly 20 minutes apart on foot.

They also sit at opposite ends of the price scale. Faena New York, open since September 2025 beside the High Line at West 18th Street, lists rooms from $780. Hyatt Place New York Chelsea, open since December 2021 on West 24th Street near Seventh Avenue, starts from $160. For the rest of Manhattan and the other boroughs, see our guide to New York.

The High Line

The park runs for 1.45 miles on a freight viaduct built in the early 1930s, from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street at Hudson Yards. The last train used it in 1980. Friends of the High Line, founded in 1999 by Joshua David and Robert Hammond, fought its demolition, and the first stretch, Gansevoort to 20th Street, opened as a park in 2009. The section through the rest of Chelsea to 30th Street followed in 2011, the loop around the rail yards in 2014, the Spur over Tenth Avenue at 30th Street in 2019, and the Moynihan Connector, a walkway east along 30th Street toward Penn Station, in 2023. The design is by James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with planting by Piet Oudolf: more than 500 species of plants and trees, many of them left to grow as they did on the abandoned tracks.

Entry is free. From April through November the park opens 7am to 10pm, and from December through March 7am to 8pm. Elevators stand at four points along the park; elsewhere access is by stairs or ramps. Chelsea Market sits directly underneath, since the viaduct passes through the building's Tenth Avenue side. The 7am opening is the time to walk it with space to stop and look at the river.

Galleries of the West 20s

More than 200 commercial galleries operate in Chelsea, most of them between West 18th and West 27th Streets and Tenth and Eleventh Avenues. Admission is free everywhere. Most open Tuesday through Saturday, from about 10am to 6pm, and many drop the Saturday in summer. New shows usually open on Thursday evenings around 6pm.

The large dealers are a few minutes apart. David Zwirner occupies several buildings on West 19th Street and one on West 20th; Hauser & Wirth and Dia Chelsea, the nonprofit Dia Art Foundation's exhibition space, are both on West 22nd; Gagosian's flagship is at 555 West 24th; Pace is on West 25th. Between and above them, often on the upper floors of former warehouses, are dozens of smaller galleries for emerging and mid-career artists, which is why the lobby directories are worth reading before you leave a building.

From Faena, David Zwirner's West 19th Street spaces are one block north. From Hyatt Place, the walk west along 24th Street to Gagosian crosses four avenues, about 15 minutes.

Chelsea Market and the piers

Chelsea Market fills the block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and 15th and 16th Streets, inside the old National Biscuit Company bakery where the Oreo was invented. Nabisco left for the suburbs in 1958. The food concourse opened in 1997, and Google bought the building in 2018 for more than $2.4 billion. The ground floor runs from 7am to 10pm, with tenants such as Lobster Place, Amy's Bread, Mokbar and Pearl River Mart, which sells Chinese homewares. Faena is about five minutes' walk north.

Across the West Side Highway, Pier 57 at 15th Street reopened in stages between 2020 and 2023 after a $410 million conversion of a former bus depot. Google has offices there, the roof is a 2.5-acre public park, and since April 2023 the ground floor has held Market 57, a food hall run with the James Beard Foundation.

Two streets further south, Little Island at West 13th Street opened in May 2021: a 2.4-acre park raised on 132 concrete "tulips" above the Hudson, designed by Heatherwick Studio with landscape architect Signe Nielsen, with a 687-seat amphitheater at its western end. North of Faena, Chelsea Piers stretches along the river from 17th to 23rd Street, with a golf driving range, ice rinks, batting cages and a climbing wall.

The older Chelsea

The neighborhood takes its name from the estate Major Thomas Clarke bought in 1750 and named after the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. His grandson, Clement Clarke Moore, gave land in 1827 for the General Theological Seminary, whose tree-shaded campus still fills the block between Ninth and Tenth Avenues and 20th and 21st Streets. Facing it, Cushman Row at 406 to 418 West 20th Street dates from 1840.

A few blocks north, London Terrace, between 23rd and 24th Streets and Ninth and Tenth Avenues, was among the largest apartment blocks in the world when it opened in 1930. The Hotel Chelsea on West 23rd Street, built in 1883-85, began as one of New York's first cooperative apartment buildings. On Eighth Avenue at 19th Street, the Joyce Theater has staged dance since 1982 in a converted cinema, the Elgin.

One change for repeat visitors: the Rubin Museum of Art closed its West 17th Street galleries in October 2024.

Where to stay in Chelsea

West Chelsea, beside the High Line

Faena New York occupies the hotel tower of One High Line, the pair of Bjarke Ingels Group towers at 500 West 18th Street, with the park running past the door. Many of its 120 rooms face the Hudson.

The building had a false start. Announced in 2016 under the name the XI, it was meant to hold Six Senses' first New York hotel. Developer HFZ Capital ran out of money before construction finished and the site went into foreclosure in 2021. Witkoff Group and Len Blavatnik's Access Industries bought the unfinished towers for about $900 million, renamed them One High Line, and in 2022 signed Faena, Alan Faena's brand with Accor as global partner, for the hotel instead. It is Faena's first hotel outside Argentina and Florida.

Inside, Faena's own design studio worked with Peter Mikic on gilt, bold pattern and commissioned art. The main restaurant, La Boca, is run by the Argentine chef Francis Mallmann and cooks over fire, under pop-art murals by Edgardo Gimenez; La Cava serves as a second dining room. The Living Room has two Art Deco-style bars and an outdoor terrace, and El Secreto is the smaller late-night room. The hotel planned Tierra Santa Healing House, a 12,000-square-foot spa with a hammam, eleven treatment rooms and an infrared sauna, for the months after opening, and a Faena Theatre for live performance for spring 2026: check both are running before you book around them.

For the subway, the A, C, E and L at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue and the C and E at 23rd Street are each about ten minutes' walk.

East Chelsea, toward Sixth Avenue

Hyatt Place New York Chelsea is a 45-story tower at 140 West 24th Street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, with 510 rooms. Hyatt describes it as the second-largest Hyatt Place in the world, a scale rarely seen for a select-service hotel in Manhattan. Rooms follow the brand's standard plan: a work desk, a separate seating area, Hyatt Grand Beds and Chromecast-enabled televisions. Pets are allowed, the gym is open 24 hours and Wi-Fi is free. Food is the Hyatt Place format, a 24-hour self-service counter with packaged items and a bar serving coffee, cocktails and regional dishes. The one feature most Hyatt Place hotels lack is the Terrace, a retractable-roof space for up to 80 people. Several upper floors look toward the Empire State Building and One World Trade Center.

The location works for transit more than for galleries: the 1 train at 23rd Street and Seventh Avenue and the F and M at 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue are each a block or so away, and Penn Station and Madison Square Garden are about ten minutes north on foot.

North of 25th Street

West of Tenth Avenue the upper 20s lead to Hudson Yards and the High Line's northern end. No tracked opening there yet.

The brownstone blocks

The residential streets of the West 20s between Eighth and Tenth Avenues have no hotel we track.

Which hotel in Chelsea for your trip

For a trip built around art, Faena puts the gallery blocks, Chelsea Market, Little Island and the Whitney Museum at Gansevoort Street within a walk, and its bars and restaurant are designed for the evening. At $780 and up, it is priced for that.

A short stay with a train or a concert at the start or the end points to Hyatt Place: Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and two subway stations are close, and rates start at $160. The work-desk layout of the rooms also suits a longer stay that mixes meetings and sightseeing.

Travelers coming mainly for Broadway might compare these two with our pages on Times Square and the Theater District, and those after cast-iron shopping streets with SoHo.

Getting around

The 1 train stops on Seventh Avenue at 18th, 23rd and 28th Streets. The C and E stop at 23rd Street on Eighth Avenue, and the A, C, E and L meet at 14th Street. The F and M run under Sixth Avenue with stops at 14th and 23rd Streets, and the 7 ends at 34th Street-Hudson Yards. Buses are useful here because the avenues west of Ninth have no subway: the M23 and M14 cross town, the M11 and M12 run north and south.

To Times Square, the 1 from 23rd Street reaches 42nd Street in three stops, and the C or E from 23rd Street takes two. Walking from Hyatt Place to Times Square takes about 20 minutes up Seventh Avenue.
