The place
The hotel sits at 1 West 28th Street in NoMad, combining a landmarked 1907 Renaissance-style building — designed by McKim, Mead & White, later a bank, never previously a hotel — with a new 24-story glass tower rising behind it.
The concept
Developer Alex Ohebshalom and designer Martin Brudnizki built the hotel around 'The Mansion': the restored McKim, Mead & White building, with its 40-foot ceilings, arched windows and Gilded Age detailing, functions as the hotel's grand public rooms, while the adjoining glass tower holds the guestrooms. The result plays deliberately against type for a new-build NYC hotel — dense, maximalist interiors referencing turn-of-the-century New York society rather than a minimalist contemporary look — aimed at a well-traveled luxury guest drawn to the NoMad dining and shopping corridor.
Dining & wellness
Café Carmellini, chef Andrew Carmellini's flagship restaurant here, anchors the hotel's dining program with French- and Italian-inflected fine dining in The Mansion's grand dining room. Additional bars and lounge spaces are spread through the historic building.
