The Twenty Two New York

The Twenty Two New York, the American debut of a London private members'-club brand, opened in February 2026 inside the 1891 Margaret Louisa Home near Union Square: a Romanesque Revival YWCA boarding house that had never before operated as a hotel. Child Studio's 77-room conversion includes a rebuilt gabled roof based on the building's original, never-realized 19th-century design.

The place

The hotel occupies 16 East 16th Street near Union Square, inside the Margaret Louisa Home: a Romanesque Revival boarding house built in 1891 by heiress and philanthropist Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard with the Young Women's Christian Association, designed by architect R.H. Robertson. The nine-storey, roughly 80,000-square-foot building had never operated as a hotel before this conversion.

The concept

The Twenty Two New York is the second outpost of a London members'-club brand founded by Navid Mirtorabi, previously a decade-long owner of Blakes Hotel, together with property developer Jamie Reuben; the original opened on Grosvenor Square in Mayfair. For New York, London-based Child Studio spent months in museum archives studying old photographs and architectural drawings of the original YWCA home rather than pursuing a period-perfect restoration, describing their approach as an act of imaginative reconstruction. The standout result is a gabled roof structure architect R.H. Robertson had originally proposed for the building in 1891 but that contemporary zoning laws blocked: Child Studio built it anyway, more than 130 years later, newly crowning the nine-storey building. The ground floor operates as public dining and gathering space; the second floor is reserved for private members only.

Dining & wellness

The hotel's ground-floor restaurant and bar are open to the public, with the second-floor members' club adding further dining and lounge space reserved for cardholders. No specific chef or restaurant-concept name was confirmed in sourcing available at the time of writing.
