The place
37 East 64th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues on Manhattan's Upper East Side — the address of the former Hotel Plaza Athénée, which closed in March 2020.
The concept
Thai conglomerate Asset World Corp (AWC), which bought the property in 1997, is redeveloping the shuttered Hotel Plaza Athénée into a Nobu-branded hotel in a joint venture with Nobu Hospitality, announced in 2023. The roughly 160,000-square-foot building — a four-story townhouse joined to a 17-story tower, originally built in 1927 as the Alrae Hotel — is being reworked by architecture and construction firm Gary Greene Design with interiors by Rockwell Group. As of mid-2026, neither AWC nor Nobu has published a construction-completion update or a specific opening month, an unusual silence for a project still targeting the same year.
Dining & wellness
Plans include a Nobu restaurant with omakase dining, a bar and lounge, rooftop event space, a traditional Japanese onsen, and a spa and wellness center; some suites are designed with glassed indoor-outdoor terraces and gazebos.
