The Slate Denver, Tapestry Collection by Hilton opened in May 2022 inside the historic 1916 Emily Griffith Opportunity School building, across from the Colorado Convention Center. Its 251 rooms and school-themed design turn a century of institutional history into the hotel's core concept.

The place

At 1250 Welton Street in Denver's Central Business District, directly across from the Colorado Convention Center and a short walk from the Denver Art Museum and Denver Botanic Gardens — a convention-trade address inherited from the building's institutional past.

The concept

The hotel occupies the former Emily Griffith Opportunity School, founded in 1916 by education reformer Emily Griffith as a school open to all ages and backgrounds; it operated as Emily Griffith Technical College until relocating in 2014, leaving the century-old building vacant. The 2022 conversion kept that history visible rather than erasing it: original staircases and hallways, typewriter-inspired artwork, and school-themed meeting rooms run through the four-story property, positioning it as a heritage adaptive-reuse project rather than a generic downtown convention hotel.

Teachers' Lounge Food + Drink serves as the hotel's restaurant, bar and lounge; the property also offers an outdoor patio, roughly 4,500 square feet of meeting and event space, and a fitness center.
