The place

Varel Singapore sits at the junction of Selegie Road and Mount Sophia, on the northern edge of the district that separates Little India from the Bras Basah-Bugis arts belt. The immediate streetscape mixes pre-war shophouses and Art Deco facades with the arts campuses of Lasalle, Nafa and Sota, plus a run of long-running coffee shops and late-night eateries that predate the redevelopment. Little India MRT station is under five minutes away on foot.

The concept

The hotel occupies the former site of Selegie Centre, a 1970s mixed retail-and-residential block that was demolished to make way for the new build. Designed by architecture firm FDAT, the building's massing and proportions were calibrated to the rhythm and scale of the surrounding shophouse row rather than imposing a taller, unrelated volume on the street. The project is described by its owner, who grew up in the Selegie neighbourhood, as a personal tribute to the area's evolving character.

Tribute Portfolio is Marriott's soft-brand collection for independently minded, design-driven hotels that keep local ownership and a distinct identity rather than a standardized look, while still plugging into Marriott Bonvoy for booking and loyalty points. Varel Singapore is presented as a demonstration case for that model: interiors built around handcrafted furnishings and locally sourced details, guestrooms split between two colour palettes with balconies designed as small suspended gardens on most units.

Dining & wellness

Food and drink run to four outlets. Hathaway Autograph is the all-day restaurant, pairing Southeast Asian dishes with British-inflected touches. Vernacular Coffee is an in-house café roasting its own beans. Saga Bar is the hotel's cocktail lounge, built around spice-forward drinks that nod to the surrounding Little India spice trade. A rooftop bar sits alongside an infinity pool on the top floor, the hotel's only outlet with skyline views over the low-rise heritage district below.

Varel Singapore, is a chain of tribute hotel under the Marriott brand. The concept is very personalised to the hotel and it's quite classy and niche. The hotel had a semi open concept lobby thus might be slightly warm on hotter days. But rooms are cool. Each alternate floor has an open common outdoor balcony where you can hang out and enjoy the city view. Rooms are compact and small but comfortable. Each rooms has its own balcony, thus you are able to expand the rooms area slightly however this will introduce outside noise into the room. Also there are sliding blinds to isolate close up the balcony. Toilet and shower is also compact like the room, so if you are of a bigger size person, might bump into the walls. Also, if you have large luggage, fully opening it might be a challenge. Despite all the downside, the location is very good. About 13 minutes walk to Bugis (where all the young people shop and spend time), it's also close to Rochor MRT. Living up to the Marriott brand, service are top notch and the hotel strive to keep the quality and space clean and comfortable for all guests. Also, to take note, as the hotel is very new, taxi and Grab drivers might not be familiar with the hotel. To access the drop off area, drivers need to drive to the back and turn into the hotel. In May 2026, I checked into the Deluxe King at Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel. Standing on the former Selegie Centre site, the 128-room Marriott Bonvoy property is located along the edge of the Bras Basah-Bugis arts district, with Little India, Bugis, and Bras Basah all within easy walking distance. Popular destinations nearby include the buzzy cafe Apartment Coffee as well as Fortune Centre, one of Singapore’s best-known foodie hubs. Both Rochor and Little India MRT Stations are around 5 minutes away on foot, while Singapore Changi Airport is around 20 minutes away by car. VAREL SINGAPORE Designed by architectural firm FDAT, the newly-built boutique hotel features interiors which pay tribute to local heritage, culture and traditions, from the saga seed sculpture near the hotel driveway and the five stones-inspired sofa seating in the lobby to the abacus-like partitions set along signature restaurant Hathaway Autograph’s terrace seating area. Guest rooms are varied in layout and presented through two distinct colour palettes (day and night), which gives you plenty of reason to return for a different stay experience. Verdant sky terraces on selected floors and spacious guest balconies provide a resort feel, with the guest room corridors bearing a distinct floral scent courtesy of collaborative perfumery house Maison21G. In terms of wellness, the hotel offers a tranquil rooftop infinity pool which is open until 10pm daily. While there is no on-site fitness centre, guests enjoy complimentary access to the double-storey gym Snap Fitness Prinsep Street less than 10 minutes away. I was impressed by the generous complimentary offerings extended to guests throughout the stay, from the TWG iced tea and scoops from local brand Denzy Gelato served upon check-in to the daily artisanal coffee redeemable from ground level cafe Vernacular Coffee. DELUXE KING Decked in wood textures with shades of cream, orange and midnight blue, the 30sqm Deluxe King boasts a large balcony with daybeds on each end and automated blinds that can be lowered to convert the area into loungeable space. The bedroom is fitted with a low-profile platform bed as well as a curved desk and upholstered stools which soften the geometry of the room. The complimentary minibar is stocked with non-alcoholic beverages, while the pantry offers both TWG tea and house-branded drop coffee. The bathroom features a full-height window which fills the cosy space with energizing rays of natural light, with a beautiful gate partition with a distinctive geometric lattice design which references traditional shophouse iron grille gates. Brass fixtures in the shower area add a sense of stylish elegance to the proceedings, while the perfumed bathroom amenities are courtesy of collaborative perfumery house Maison21G. Pro tip: you may want to avoid rooming with your mother during your stay. The semi-opaque frosted glass between the shower and bedroom turns the act of bathing into performative spectacle, with blurred contours and silhouettes visible from the bedroom giving strong, voyeuristic vibes. Gorgeous boutique hotel with great service especially from the guest relation staff at the check-in lounge and the Hathaway restaurant! Chelsy was very helpful and made me feel welcomed. The refreshing gelato and ice tea as part of the check-in experience is really thoughtful! I also appreciate the lightings designed along the corridors which makes the hotel feel posh, zen and inviting! None of the cramp and stuffy feeling. The room though compact is very well designed, it feels modern yet cosy. Absolutely like the idea of the extended balcony and the prints of the blinds! The curated amenities are lovely, the scent made the stay so memorable and relaxed. Also delighted to find drip coffee and ceramic mugs in the room! There's also a rooftop infinity pool that overlooks the Selegie district! Highly recommended to experience it for yourself as one of the tribute portfolio collection hotels in Singapore! The hotel's restaurant Hathaway Autograph serves Southeast Asian cuisine with a contemporary twist, while breakfast buffet is also served in the same space. Highly recommended for lunch or dinner even if you are not staying in the hotel. I cant wait to visit again!

Style: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 4.5/5 - Tasty / authentic / local food on offer. Room: 3/5 - I assume architects / designers did not consider that travelers have luggage? The balcony is a nice touch, but not particularly functional (AC turns off if you open the door or blind) - nice for the occasional cool / breezy evening. Pool: 3/5 - Need to add umbrellas and beverage / snack service / happy hour?

My parents stayed here and I was able to visit and hang out with them! Overall, a very fresh, clean, quaint hotel that has a lot to offer. The staff were consistently kind and friendly and warm, and the rooms were small but well designed to maximize the space. My parents room had a balcony that could be enclosed to add additional seating for the room when we want to rest and hang out. The second floor lobby, bar and restaurant area is charming and unique and has great vibes at night, especially during the lounge hours when you can sit and enjoy the view from the windows as the sun starts to set. The location is also quite nice. It can be difficult at times for the rideshare drivers to find the location for the pickup, but that will probably improve as the hotel becomes more known amongst drivers. Little India and the tekka centre are just across the street, which can be difficult to cross so you can take the MRT exit just northwest of the hotel to cross under the street as well as exit the MRT.
