Mondrian Singapore Duxton, Ennismore's first Southeast Asian hotel under the brand, opened in stages through the first half of 2023 before its formal grand-opening announcement on 12 July 2023. The 302-room property combines a new tower with restored Duxton Hill shophouses, designed by Los Angeles-based Studio Carter and anchored by Dario Cecchini's Bottega di Carna and a six-metre KAWS sculpture.

The place

The hotel occupies a corner of Duxton Hill, a compact grid of two- and three-storey conservation shophouses in Tanjong Pagar, a few minutes' walk from the Central Business District and Chinatown. The neighbourhood built its reputation on nightlife and dining rather than hotels (Duxton Hill has long had a colourful history as a red-light and opium-trade district before its conservation-era conversion into bars, cafés and boutiques) and this is the first hotel of this scale and brand profile to open directly on it.

The concept

Los Angeles-based Studio Carter, led by Robbyn Carter, designed the property from the ground up around what the brand calls 'deconstructed shophouse chic': rather than a literal restoration, the design breaks the shophouse's proportions, shutters and roof forms into stylised, contemporary references, applied across a low-rise conserved block and a new tower built behind and above it. The 302 rooms and suites include a run of Shophouse Suites carved out of the conserved section, alongside standard rooms in the new tower with 360-degree skyline views from the upper floors. The property carries a curated art collection mixing Singaporean and international names, Ian Davenport and Dawn Ng among them, anchored by a six-metre KAWS sculpture installed as the hotel's centrepiece, its first public display in Asia.

Dining & wellness

Bottega di Carna, the flagship restaurant, is run by Dario Cecchini, the Tuscan butcher known for his showmanship, serving Italian meat-forward dishes from an open kitchen at lobby level. Jungle Ballroom is a tropical cocktail bar reached through a secret tunnel; Christina's operates as an artisan-goods space by day and a wine bar by night; and Canyon Club, the rooftop bar and pool, leans on a 1970s Hollywood theme with cabanas and skyline views.

A great hotel in Singapore, but not worth 5 stars. The Service is okay, but was clearly better served at other hotels (3&4 stars), the staff do no greet you in the morning, even after your stay no questions to see with us how it was, they will help if you ask them but I would prefer more proactive service given the standing. The room was a bit small, but very well arranged and the view was really great from the 5th floor. Isolation is good as well and the bed was comfortable so really nothing to complain about. Breakfast was a big disappointment. First they do have some affluence prediction for breakfast BUT the staff in charge did not inform us beforehand and we came at a very busy moment. After some wait we are offered to go to the ballroom on the other side to seat, which is not an issue for us. However, the state in which we have found the room was in no standard something correct. I do not know if they are understaffed, but none of the tables have been cleared at any point of time, the room did not smell very giod, no music, nothing was there and even the tables were not arranged for catering us. No staff came in to check on us or remove the plates, and it is a bit of an etiquette mistake to allocate client there to never attend to them or even offer them a better seat once the big wave of people is gone. The buffet was alright, nothing special about it, not a lot of Singaporean food which is very sad considering that this hotel is suppose to cater for tourists as well. Not the worst experience, but not worth the money either.

We spent 6 days at the Mondrian Singapore Duxton (2 rooms for my husband, myself, and our two young adult daughters) and we had a really lovely stay. The hotel's location is absolutely excellent, and the property itself is beautiful. Our rooms featured gorgeous floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of the city skyline.The highlight for us was definitely the rooftop pool, which offers a fantastic atmosphere. However, we did notice that the property could benefit from better maintenance in a few areas. For instance, several plants around the pool area were neglected or dead, and the sink in one of our two rooms was clogged.The breakfast was very good and offered a wide variety of choices. However, as Europeans, we found the fruit selection quite disappointing. It mostly featured fruits that are common to us, like apples, bananas, melon, and oranges. We were really expecting and hoping to enjoy their delicious local tropical fruits.A special mention goes to our last evening at the Jungle Ballroom. The atmosphere with the live DJ and the bar was great fun. A huge thank you to the two managers/bartenders, Ez and Faqrin, who were incredibly kind, welcoming, and exceptionally skilled at making cocktails! We would certainly recommend this hotel, hoping they will fine-tune these small details to make the guest experience even more perfect.

Best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The roof top pool is beautiful! I had such a relaxing time here. Rooms and clean and comfortable. Maxwell food centre just down the road :)

Jungle Ballroom has a fantastic atmosphere, great music, and excellent drinks. Thanks to EZ especially for accommodating and being so friendly, knowledgeable, and made some of the best cocktails I’ve had. Service was quick, the vibe was welcoming, and the overall experience was outstanding. Highly recommend this place for a fun night out with friends. Will definitely be back!

Overall happy with my stay here, I agree withany other comments that it's not a 5 star hotel. It seems to focus more on aesthetics than a genuine guest experience. My interactions with staff were good and they work hard, although a couple of times our requests for ice were not fulfilled, but mistakes happen. The pool and rooftop bar are very nice, but the beds can be uncomfortable and the pool felt a bit dirty by the end of the day. The cocktails served at the pool were very well made compared to other places in Singapore. Rooms are small but the view was nice. The bathroom was often wet due to the design of the shower. The coffee machine was annoying to work, but the coffee itself was nice. Overall quite satisfied. Happily we didn't have noise problems as others have.
