Hollywood Volume, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

tommie Hollywood opened December 1, 2021 in Hollywood's so-called Vinyl District, a 212-room lifestyle property from JdV by Hyatt built around a nine-floor midcentury design by Studio Collective. Rather than treat the ground floor as a lobby, the hotel gives over more than 15,000 square feet to shared food, drink and workspace, anchored by a Yucatan-inspired restaurant from chef Wes Avila. It became one of the more talked-about openings in a stretch of Hollywood that spent the early 2020s rebuilding its hotel identity block by block.

The place

The hotel sits in Hollywood near Sunset Boulevard, in a cluster of blocks that hospitality press has taken to calling the Vinyl District, after the record stores and music-industry history embedded in the neighborhood. It stands adjacent to Thompson Hollywood, within walking distance of the Sunset Strip, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Capitol Records Building, with Runyon Canyon and Griffith Observatory a short drive away. The area had spent years associated more with tourist-trap souvenir shops than serious hospitality; tommie's arrival alongside a handful of other new hotels and restaurants marked a deliberate push to reposition it as a place Angelenos, not just visitors, would choose to spend an evening.

The concept

Studio Collective designed tommie Hollywood around a midcentury modern language borrowed from Los Angeles case study homes of the late 1950s and 1960s, using exposed structural steel, natural white oak, blackstone and handmade ceramics — an aesthetic the studio has described as favoring the tactile over the polished. The 212 rooms occupy nine floors, with seven one-bedroom suites on the top level; owner Relevant Group worked with architecture and interior firm Steinberg Hart on the build, and Ten Five Hospitality runs food and beverage across the property. The hotel positions itself less as a place to sleep than a place to be: a ground-floor coffee bar, a lobby built around a steel-clad fireplace, a courtyard lounge with garden seating and open workspaces all fold into the more than 15,000 square feet of communal amenity space that Hyatt cited as the property's defining feature at launch. In-room touches — a pre-game package, disposable cameras, a "dream journal" — lean into the same casual, slightly theatrical register aimed at a younger, design-literate traveler rather than a business or luxury-resort clientele.

Dining & wellness

KA'TEEN, the hotel's signature restaurant, is run by chef Wes Avila of Guerrilla Tacos and serves Yucatan Peninsula-inspired cooking across more than 5,000 square feet of outdoor dining space. On the roof, Desert 5 Spot pairs a pool and lounge with 360-degree views of Los Angeles and a country-inflected bar program that has run weekly line dancing and live music since opening. A ground-floor coffee bar and late-night snack menu round out the food and drink offer, with a recurring Tuesday-to-Thursday social hour in the lobby.
