citizenM Los Angeles Downtown

citizenM opened its Los Angeles debut in September 2021, an 11-story, 315-room tower at the corner of West 4th and South Spring Streets in the city's Historic Core. Built from prefabricated modular units shipped in and stacked on site, it replaced a surface parking lot and stands as the first urban high-rise modular hotel in Los Angeles. The project pairs citizenM's compact, tech-forward room formula with a rooftop deck and 24/7 canteenM bar-restaurant, on a block a few steps from the Broadway Theater District and Little Tokyo.

The place

The hotel sits at the northwest corner of 4th and Spring Streets in Downtown LA's Historic Core, an area of early-20th-century commercial buildings now filled with galleries, bars and independent restaurants. The Broadway Theater District, with its restored movie palaces, and Little Tokyo are both within walking distance, and a Metro station one block away connects guests to Hollywood and the Sunset Boulevard corridor without a car. The address places the hotel inside a stretch of Downtown LA that has been repopulated over the past decade by loft conversions and hospitality openings, rather than the convention-center or financial-district clusters where most large LA hotels concentrate.

The concept

citizenM Los Angeles Downtown was developed with local operating partner BLVD Hospitality, with HLW International as architect, on a site that had been a parking lot at 4th and Spring. The building is composed mostly of prefabricated modular units manufactured off-site and shipped in for stacking, a construction method citizenM has used on several other properties to compress build times and cut waste; the project ran from late 2018 to mid-2021 and cost roughly $70 million. At 315 rooms across 11 stories and about 95,000 square feet, it is a mid-size addition to the brand's US footprint and, at the time, its highest-profile bet on the Southern California market. Rooms follow citizenM's standard playbook: an XL king bed, wall-to-wall windows, a rainfall shower, and an in-room tablet controlling television, lighting, temperature and blinds, with little variation from unit to unit given the modular build. The ground floor is organized around the brand's signature "living room" — a lobby mixing curated furniture, books and artwork in place of a conventional front desk — and includes five meeting rooms along 4th Street under the societyM banner. A ground-floor photography series, "Citizens of Los Angeles" by Corinne Schiavone, depicts local artists, business owners and activists from the surrounding neighborhood, tying the otherwise standardized building to its Downtown LA site.

Dining & wellness

Food and drink run through canteenM, citizenM's round-the-clock restaurant-and-bar concept: barista coffee and hot breakfast in the morning, salads and warm dishes at midday and into the evening, then cocktails and draft beer at night, all served from the same ground-floor space rather than a separate destination restaurant. The roof level holds a 24-hour fitness center and a terrace deck looking out over the 4th and Spring intersection and the surrounding Downtown skyline. Details on any rooftop bar service beyond the terrace deck are not confirmed as of this writing.
