The West Hollywood EDITION

The West Hollywood EDITION opened in November 2019 on the site of the demolished Rat Pack-era Scandia restaurant, at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Doheny Drive. Ian Schrager and Marriott's fourth EDITION property, designed by British architect John Pawson, pairs 190 minimalist rooms with chef John Fraser's Ardor restaurant and a rooftop pool over the Strip.

The place

The hotel sits at 9040 West Sunset Boulevard, on the corner with North Doheny Drive, marking the exact point where West Hollywood gives way to Beverly Hills along the Sunset Strip. The eleven-story tower, with 20 attached residences, replaced the Rat Pack-era Scandia restaurant, torn down in 2015 after standing derelict for years — a site with more Hollywood folklore attached to it than most of the Strip.

The concept

The West Hollywood EDITION is Marriott's fourth EDITION property and the brand's first ground-up build in Los Angeles, a joint venture between Ian Schrager and Marriott International that pairs Schrager's boutique-hotel instincts with a major chain's balance sheet. British architect John Pawson, known for an austere, light-driven minimalism more associated with galleries and private houses than hotels, designed a building deliberately restrained for a neighborhood built on excess — poured concrete, glass and warm wood in place of the gilt and mirrors of the Strip's older generation of hotels. The site's past is acknowledged rather than erased: an art installation pairing an oil drum with a frying pan nods to the plot's earlier lives as a gas station and then Scandia, the Scandinavian restaurant where Frank Sinatra kept a private office upstairs. That layered history reads as a footnote rather than a theme — the hotel's actual positioning is contemporary and design-literate, aimed at a guest who wants EDITION's aesthetic authority over West Hollywood's more theatrical resorts.

Dining & wellness

Ardor, the ground-floor restaurant, is run by Michelin-starred chef John Fraser and built around vegetable-forward Californian cooking in a plant-filled, forest-like room. The rooftop pool deck and bar overlook the Hollywood Hills and the Strip, and the hotel also has a spa and fitness center.
