The Sun Rose West Hollywood

Pendry West Hollywood opened April 2, 2021, on the site of the old House of Blues at Sunset Boulevard and Olive Drive, marking Montage International's Pendry brand debut in Los Angeles. The 149-room hotel arrived with two Wolfgang Puck restaurants, a live-entertainment venue and a private social club built into the Sunset Strip's rock-and-roll lineage. In August 2025, following an ownership change, the property was rebranded as The Sun Rose West Hollywood — the name recorded here is the one it opened under.

The place

The hotel occupies a full city block at the southeast corner of Sunset Boulevard and Olive Drive, on ground the Strip has treated as consecrated since the House of Blues stood there from 1994 to 2013. Whisky a Go Go, the Roxy and the Rainbow Bar & Grill sit a few minutes' walk away, and Chateau Marmont is just up the hill — a stretch of boulevard built on live music and late nights rather than resort calm. West Hollywood's Design District and Beverly Hills are close enough for daytime errands, but the Strip itself supplies the after-dark traffic the hotel was designed to intercept. It trades seclusion for proximity to the exact scene it wants guests to step into.

The concept

Pendry is Montage International's younger, more urban sibling brand, and West Hollywood was its first Los Angeles address after earlier openings in San Diego and Baltimore. Developers AECOM Capital and Combined Properties spent roughly $500 million on the project, pairing the 149-room hotel with 40 condominium residences in a separate mid-rise tower to the south. Architecture came from EYRC (Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney) working with Cuningham Group, and the exterior leans into the Strip's billboard culture rather than away from it, wrapping the Olive Drive facade in a multi-story LED screen that keeps the building talking to the street after dark. Inside, British designer Martin Brudnizki set a tone closer to theatrical drawing room than glass-box hotel lobby: teal walls, checkerboard marble floors, a metallic tree strung with Swarovski crystals and mother-of-pearl leaves, and a glass sculpture by artist Anthony James as the centerpiece. More than twenty local and international artists appear across the property in a collection curated by Lendrum Fine Art. The result reads as a hotel built for a crowd that grew up on the Strip's music-venue history rather than one importing a generic luxury template — the program leans toward music-industry guests and Sunset Strip regulars as much as conventional business or resort travel.

Dining & wellness

Both restaurants carry Wolfgang Puck's name. Merois, on the rooftop, serves Japanese, Southeast Asian and French-Californian dishes with a view down the Strip; Ospero, at street level, is the all-day, wood-oven counterpart for pizza, pasta and breakfast. Bar Pendry, off the lobby, pairs a cocktail list with a Moët & Chandon vending machine. A 100-seat live-entertainment venue and a members-only club called The Britely — bowling alley, underground lounge, rooftop bar — extend the hotel into nightlife territory, while Spa Pendry, a rooftop pool and a Peloton-equipped gym cover more conventional hotel ground.
