The place

The hotel occupies the former Mart South Building at 124 E Olympic Boulevard in Downtown Los Angeles's Fashion District, a wholesale-trade building being converted into a hotel for the first time rather than reflagged from an existing one.

The concept

Announced in September 2023 as Ennismore's second Los Angeles outpost for its playful, graffiti-and-neon Mama Shelter brand, the project is being developed with Shivom LLC, led by Harry and Kevin Wadhwani. It follows Mama Shelter LA, which opened in Hollywood in May 2015 and closed in February 2025: meaning the brand's original Los Angeles foothold shut down roughly a year before this second property was due to replace it. The plan calls for 149 keys in Mama's signature irreverent style, converted from the mart building's existing shell rather than built from the ground up.

Dining & wellness

The announced program includes three F&B outlets: an all-day dining restaurant and café at ground level, and a rooftop bar and terrace overlooking Downtown LA, alongside a fitness centre and parking garage, Mama Shelter's usual playbook of a lively ground floor paired with a rooftop draw.

Each room has its own unique design and style here, and the hotel is dog-friendly too! 🐶 There’s a fantastic restaurant located downstairs, and a phenomenal rooftop lounge/deck bar where you can enjoy a bite to eat while kicking back on a comfy day bed or sitting at the bar and viewing up at the Hollywood Hills!

I was in town for a concert and stayed 3 nights at Mama's. From the write-ups and piecing together the different reviews it's difficult to wrap your brain around what you'll actually experience. Oddly, once you're there it all makes sense. The entry is pretty simple, restaurant on one side, bar on another and the from desk just past the giant Foosball table (of course). The rooms are on the smaller side, but clean and very well laid out. The sheets are very high quality and beds comfortable. The rooftop bar is awesome. It can get crowded and rightfully so as on the weekends it's basically an open-air club with a great DJ. They advertise repeatedly they include X-rated channels. I've decided that's basically just a filter. The vibe is inclusive and adult, but not in a creepy way. It's simply not ideal for kids. I'd 100% stay here again.

When in LA, this rooftop is a must! Loved chilling here with the Hollywood sign view in the background. Food & drinks were great, vibes were super fun and it’s the perfect spot to hang out with friends. 🌴🍹🌆

The hotel is good, but it definitely has a party vibe. The rooftop is the main attraction, and the rooms are designed with a “spicy” touch, almost as if the purpose is to head up to the rooftop and then grab a room for the night. You don’t see many people around the hotel aside from those at the rooftop bar. That said, the staff is incredibly friendly, and I really enjoyed my stay. However, there’s no gym, and while I had a good experience, I probably wouldn’t return.

Had an amazing time at Mama’s Shelter rooftop, my review is for drinks and dancing! The music was on point, great DJ, definitely fun vibes, and the drinks were really well-made. It does get pretty crowded on weekends, so service can feel a bit overwhelmed, but the atmosphere, decor, and views are great!! Can’t wait to come back and try their food next time!
