Thompson Hollywood

Thompson Hollywood opened on August 9, 2021, planting Hyatt's lifestyle brand in a new 11-story building on Wilcox Avenue, a block from Hollywood and Vine. The 190-room property was designed inside by London firm Tara Bernerd & Partners, trading the neighborhood's usual costume-drama nostalgia for a leaner, mid-century-inflected read on Hollywood glamour. It was developed and is owned by Relevant Group, a Los Angeles firm that has built much of its portfolio around this stretch of Hollywood.

The place

The hotel sits on Wilcox Avenue, a block off the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street — the corner that gave the film industry its address a century ago and still anchors the neighborhood's identity, now served by the Metro Red Line station beneath it. The Capitol Records Building, the Pantages Theatre and the Walk of Fame are all within walking distance, while Runyon Canyon, the Hollywood Bowl, Griffith Observatory and the Sunset Strip are a short drive away. This particular stretch of Hollywood has been rebuilding for over a decade, adding office towers, apartments and restaurants around the older studio infrastructure, and Thompson Hollywood was constructed as new-build rather than adapted from an existing structure.

The concept

Thompson Hollywood is a ground-up, 11-story building — architecture by Steinberg Hart, interiors by Tara Bernerd & Partners — raised specifically for the hotel rather than converted from an older Hollywood landmark, which frees the design from the pastiche that defines much of the neighborhood's hospitality. Bernerd's team drew on West Coast Modernism more than golden-age Hollywood iconography: custom terrazzo floors with metal inlay, mid-toned timber, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Hollywood Hills, and greenery worked through the public spaces rather than treated as accent. The 190 guestrooms include 16 suites, finished with D.S. & Durga amenities and 55-inch smart TVs, and a rooftop pool and lounge sit above it all with unobstructed views toward the Hollywood sign. As a Thompson Hotels property, it slots into Hyatt's luxury lifestyle collection, positioned for guests who want a design-forward stay without the theme-park signaling that surrounds much of Hollywood Boulevard. Hotel leadership has described the aim as capturing "a breezy Angeleno lifestyle" rather than a themed homage to the entertainment industry — a bet that a well-built, well-located hotel can outcompete the neighborhood's more overtly nostalgic properties on the strength of its rooms, its rooftop and its restaurant rather than its references.

Dining & wellness

The hotel's restaurant, Mes Amis, is a modern French brasserie designed by Martin Brudnizki and helmed by chef Lincoln Carson, previously of Le Bernardin and La Côte Basque; the menu reworks brasserie classics with produce sourced from local farms and the Hollywood Farmers' Market. On the roof, Bar Lis takes cues from the French Riviera, pairing the pool and lounge with wraparound views of the Hollywood Hills and a retractable roof that keeps it running through the year. Both venues are operated by Ten Five Hospitality, with a lobby bar rounding out the food and beverage program for coffee, cocktails and casual bites.
