1 Hotel West Hollywood
Three names and a stalled decade later, this Sunset Strip tower finally opened in 2019 as 1 Hotels' eco-luxury flagship on the West Coast.
Open · July 2019
1 Hotel West Hollywood opened in July 2019 at Sunset and La Cienega, the fourth property in Starwood Capital's eco-luxury 1 Hotels brand, after the same SOM-designed tower spent years under construction as The James and briefly opened as a pop-up called The Jeremy. The 286-room hotel pairs chef Chris Crary's 1 Kitchen with a Bamford Wellness Spa and a rooftop pool over the Strip.

The place
The two-tower, 388,000-square-foot complex rises at 8490 Sunset Boulevard, on the southeast corner of Sunset and La Cienega — the western gateway to the Strip, opposite the Sunset Marquis and a short walk from the Whisky a Go Go.
The concept
The site went through three identities before any of them opened to the public. Approved in 1999 as part of the long-stalled Sunset Millennium development, it sat dormant for over a decade until CIM Group acquired the parcel in 2011 and broke ground in 2013 — first announced as a West Coast outpost of the Chicago-based James Hotels. Starwood Capital Group took over the unfinished project in 2016 and used it for a short-lived pop-up under a temporary name, The Jeremy, which opened in August 2017 while the permanent brand and renovation were finalized. The tower reopened for good in July 2019 as 1 Hotel West Hollywood, the fourth property in Starwood Capital's sustainability-driven 1 Hotels brand and the neighborhood's first ground-up hotel in nearly three decades. The eco-luxury positioning runs through the architecture as much as the marketing: reclaimed wood, living walls and a LEED Silver certification with a 95 Energy Star score, aimed at a guest who wants the Strip's address without its usual excess.
Dining & wellness
1 Kitchen, the all-day restaurant helmed by chef Chris Crary, focuses on farm-to-table Californian cooking. Harriet's Rooftop Lounge and the Juniper Lounge and Garden cover cocktails and lobby-level socializing, and the Bamford Wellness Spa — created with British organic-skincare label Bamford — has five treatment rooms plus an infrared sauna and red-light therapy. A rooftop plunge pool overlooks the Los Angeles skyline.
