The place

The hotel sits at 188 14th Street NE in Midtown Atlanta, steps from Piedmont Park and directly connected to the Colony Square complex, including the Politan Row food hall. Midtown is Atlanta's arts and business corridor, putting the property within walking distance of the High Museum of Art, the Fox Theatre, and the offices that drive the neighborhood's corporate travel demand.

The concept

The tower opened in 1973 as part of the original Colony Square development and operated as W Atlanta Midtown under Marriott from 2008 until 2022, when new ownership took the property through a full renovation and moved it into Hilton's Curio Collection: an independently branded portfolio rather than a Hilton-flagged conversion in name only. The redesign leans on Atlanta's identity as a heavily wooded city, using floral ceiling prints, bird motifs, and murals of local musicians and cultural figures in place of the W brand's former nightlife-driven aesthetic. The repositioning targets both corporate groups, via roughly 45,500 square feet of meeting space including a 9,400-square-foot ballroom, and leisure travelers drawn to Midtown's cultural institutions.

Dining & wellness

Lantana, the hotel's all-day restaurant and lobby bar led by executive chef Cole Pate, serves through breakfast, dinner, and late-night service and hosts weekly live music. The Spa at The Starling offers treatments and wellness packages, and a terrace-level pool provides food and beverage service with cabana rentals. Guests also have direct access to the food stalls of Politan Row at the adjoining Colony Square development.

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ We had a really enjoyable stay at The Starling Hotel overall. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout our visit. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated, the rooms were clean and spacious, and the location was perfect for exploring Atlanta. We also loved the evening atmosphere at the bar—the DJ was fantastic and made it a fun place to relax after a day out. There were just a few things that kept this from being a five-star stay. The beds were much firmer than we prefer leaving us with sore necks and backs, and the prices in the convenience shop were surprisingly high (paying $10 for a single bottle of Smartwater was hard to justify). The valet attendants were courteous, but the operation seemed disorganized. Our valet ticket was mixed up, which left us waiting quite a while for our car, and the valet phone wasn’t working, making it difficult to get an update. Overall, we’d definitely stay here again because the positives outweighed the negatives. With a few improvements to the valet process and more reasonable convenience store pricing, this would easily be a five-star experience.

I booked a room for my birthday. The room was well equipped and had modern decor. I loved the steam shower and sauna. My massage at the spa was fantastic. I would definitely book with Tamiko again. Nitosha at the bar was also very helpful with helping me navigate the hotel and finding the speakeasy. She also made a wonderful mocktail. Overall a great stay and would stay again.

My friend and I recently stayed in The Starling in Midtown, and we were both very pleased! We utilized valet parking and they work professional, kind, and expeditious. The concierge was very helpful, professional, and kind as well. The rooms were clean, minus very few spots in the bathrooms. I also have to mention the decor and ambiance of the hotel. We were not able to utilize all the amenities due to the duration of our stay, but lobby, halls, and sitting areas were fabulous and was very pleasant to look at. Overall, the stay, service, decor, and location of the hotel was highly convenient and stunning.

As a Hilton Honors member, I booked directly with The Starling, completed digital check-in, and selected my room through the app before arriving. Despite that, the hotel reassigned my room, and when I arrived at approximately 10:50 p.m., the replacement room still was not ready. What should have been a seamless arrival became a disorganized, 30-minute check-in requiring management intervention. The room itself was clean and comfortable, but the service failures began immediately afterward. On my first night, I attempted to order in-room dining. No one answered the dedicated line, the transferred call, or the hotel's main number from my cell phone. I ultimately went downstairs, where I was never greeted or seated in the hotel's only restaurant. After waiting, I approached the bar myself and asked if the kitchen could prepare a simple order of scrambled eggs. The request was simply refused. The following morning, I again attempted to order in-room dining, both by telephone and through the Hilton app. Again, there was no response. I ultimately met with the Food & Beverage Manager, and the hotel issued a $50 service recovery credit—not because of the eggs, but because its guest service systems had repeatedly failed. Even at checkout, I had to remind staff to apply the credit. On my final morning, I was instructed to place my breakfast order by text message because the normal ordering process remained unreliable. Ordering room service on my last morning is a long-standing travel tradition. For approximately $80 before gratuity, breakfast arrived in brown paper takeout bags with disposable containers, loose condiment packets, no tray, no cart, no water glasses, and no flatware. The scrambled eggs tasted like reheated institutional egg product. The presentation and quality were indistinguishable from cafeteria takeout while being priced as premium hotel dining. The one bright spot was the spa. Although it is no longer a Bliss Spa, the massage therapists were exceptional and provided the only experience during my stay that reflected premium hospitality. I remember this property as the W Atlanta Midtown. The W delivered the sophisticated experience it promised. Today's Starling still markets that same elevated experience, but based on my stay, the operation does not support the branding. Over two nights, nearly every guest-facing service I relied upon failed: digital check-in, room readiness, telephone responsiveness, in-room dining, restaurant service, room service, service recovery, and checkout. Travelers paying premium rates deserve to know that distinction before booking.

The Starling Atlanta was a great place to stay. The hotel was clean, modern, and well maintained. Overall, the staff was friendly and professional, from the valet team to the front desk. The only exception was one female valet attendant who wasn't as pleasant as the rest of the staff, but everyone else provided excellent service. A special shout-out to Bryan in the hotel restaurant. He provided outstanding service, was attentive and personable, and made our dining experience even better. The food was excellent and exceeded our expectations. The location was another major plus. The hotel is within walking distance of several restaurants, bars, shopping, and attractions in Midtown, making it easy to explore the area without needing to drive. We appreciated being able to walk to so many places while still having a comfortable, relaxing hotel to come back to. Overall, we had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend The Starling to anyone visiting Atlanta.
