The place
Old Granada Studios sits on Quay Street, in the St John's quarter of central Manchester, a former television production site now being reshaped into a cultural and hospitality district a short walk from Deansgate, the Science and Industry Museum and the Manchester Opera House. The building itself is part of the draw: completed in 1956 to a design by architect Ralph Tubbs for Granada TV founders Cecil and Sidney Bernstein, it was the first purpose-built television studio in the UK. Mollie's and Soho House have taken over its 100,000 sq ft across five floors, replacing the old Granada signage with Mollie's red neon lettering while keeping the modernist façade intact.
The concept
Mollie's Manchester is the brand's third property and its first move from roadside motel to city-centre hotel, a shift reflected in a more expansive room mix: classic doubles and twins, bunk rooms and studios sit alongside suites with freestanding bathtubs, walk-in wardrobes, rainfall showers and Peloton bikes. Rooms are fitted with Dyson Airwraps and GHD straighteners, and rates start from £139 a night. Soho House Design led the renovation, working to preserve the building's modernist bones while adding playful references to its television past — dark wood panelling, terrazzo and aged brass finishes throughout, alongside artwork commissioned from artists based in the north of England. The top two floors belong to Soho House: 23 bedrooms reserved exclusively for members plus an 80 sq m private apartment, marking the members' club's first presence outside London and the south. Hotel guests get their own point of access to the brand's world via a shared first-floor gym, kitted out with free weights, studio space, a steam room and sauna. The arrangement positions Mollie's as the accessible, walk-in counterpart to Soho House's membership model, under one modernist roof.
Dining & wellness
The ground floor houses Mollie's Diner, seating around 140 across a main room and a 30-cover private dining space, styled with counter seating and leather banquettes in a mid-century register that nods to both the building's 1950s architecture and vintage American diners. In the basement, Studio IV is the property's cocktail bar, with live music, a VIP bar and snug, and a heated outdoor terrace. A lounge-lobby doubles as a bar, casual dining spot and co-working space for guests working outside their rooms.
