Now open in Canberra

Coming soon in Canberra

We track nine hotels in Canberra: four already open (Little National Hotel Canberra (2015), A by Adina Canberra (2021), The Sebel Canberra Campbell (2022) and Midnight Hotel, Autograph Collection (2019)) and five confirmed but not yet open, including Crystalbrook Aurora and a paired InterContinental/Hotel Indigo development that will give the capital its first true international luxury address downtown. First-time visitors and anyone attending Parliament House business do best in Civic or Barton; travelers who want Canberra's café-and-bar scene should look at Braddon instead.

What to do

A weekend in Canberra

Spend a morning at Parliament House and the National Gallery of Australia in the Parliamentary Triangle, both a short walk or drive from Barton's Realm Precinct, then head to Lake Burley Griffin for a walk or cycle along the foreshore. In the evening, Braddon's Lonsdale Street strip covers dinner and drinks a few minutes from the CBD, or stay in Civic for the Canberra Centre and the city's core restaurants.

A full week

A longer stay allows a day at the Australian War Memorial in Campbell, a short walk from The Sebel Canberra Campbell, followed by an afternoon in the National Arboretum or on the Mount Ainslie lookout for a full view over the city's planned layout. Manuka and Griffith's village-style strip, a few minutes' drive from the centre, is worth an evening for its restaurants and boutique shopping, and the National Zoo & Aquarium or a day trip to nearby wine regions rounds out a week in the capital. Canberra's museums (the National Museum of Australia on the Acton peninsula, Questacon's science centre and the National Portrait Gallery, all clustered around the Parliamentary Triangle) are easily combined with the National Gallery on a single museum-focused day, and none of the city's major galleries charges general admission.

Where to stay in Canberra

Civic (city centre)

Civic is Canberra's downtown core, home to the Canberra Centre shopping mall, the bus and light rail interchange and the bulk of the city's restaurants. It's also where the capital's next wave of hotels is concentrated: Crystalbrook Aurora, a 225-room, 10-storey tower confirmed for early 2027 at Garema Place opposite Canberra Centre, will be the group's first Canberra property, its curved facade designed as a nod to the city's parliamentary architecture and its interiors paying tribute to Marion Mahony Griffin, one of the world's first licensed female architects and a formative figure in Canberra's original design. Construction topped out in January 2026. Two blocks away on Binara Street, IHG and Salter Brothers plan to demolish the existing Crowne Plaza and replace it with a 14-storey, dual-brand precinct pairing InterContinental Canberra with the boutique Hotel Indigo Canberra, sharing 530 rooms and roughly 350 residential apartments across two towers: no opening date has been set for either, though a development application was still active in early-to-mid 2026.

Braddon

Just north of Civic, Braddon has become Canberra's trendiest neighbourhood, its Lonsdale Street strip packed with cafés, bars and independent shops. Midnight Hotel, Autograph Collection opened here in September 2019, a 199-room boutique built around an art-filled atrium, with a commissioned artwork in every room. A second Braddon project, Canyon Hotel, is a proposed 72-room hotel and spa on the former Braddon Bowls Club site, designed around a canyon-inspired courtyard: still awaiting development approval, with construction targeted for 2027.

Barton & the Parliamentary Triangle

Barton sits inside DOMA Group's Realm Precinct, directly opposite the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and a 15-to-20-minute walk from Parliament House. Little National Hotel Canberra opened here in September 2015, launching what its developer called Australia's first compact-luxury hotel concept: 120 rooms held to 16 square metres in exchange for a five-star fit-out and a super-prime address.

Constitution Avenue

A by Adina Canberra opened in January 2021 inside the newly built Constitution Place tower, between the Parliamentary Triangle and Lake Burley Griffin. It was the global launch property for TFE Hotels' "A by Adina" apartment-hotel sub-brand, aimed at both business travellers and longer-stay guests roughly 400 metres from the National Convention Centre.

Griffith & Manuka

Manuka Hotel is under construction on Canberra Avenue on the site of the demolished Capitol Theatre, a 192-room, five-star project developer Sotiria Liangis expects to open in late 2026, though a persistently rumoured Hilton operator remains unconfirmed.

Campbell

The Sebel Canberra Campbell opened in September 2022, a 63-key apartment-hotel a short walk from the Australian War Memorial and the Russell defence precinct. Every unit is self-contained with a kitchenette and laundry, built for longer-stay corporate, government and defence-sector visitors.

Which hotel for your trip

Couples & design-focused travellers

Midnight Hotel's art-filled atrium and Braddon address, a short walk from the neighbourhood's cafés and bars, make it the capital's most design-led option among hotels already open.

Government, diplomatic & business travellers

Little National Hotel Canberra sits directly opposite the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Barton, while A by Adina Canberra's Constitution Avenue tower is close to the National Convention Centre, both put government and conference travel within a short walk.

Longer stays & defence-sector visitors

The Sebel Canberra Campbell's self-contained apartments near the Australian War Memorial and Russell precinct suit extended corporate or defence postings better than a standard hotel room.

Travellers waiting on Canberra's next wave

Five confirmed projects (Crystalbrook Aurora, the paired InterContinental Canberra and Hotel Indigo Canberra, Manuka Hotel and Canyon Hotel) will roughly double the capital's hotel count over the coming years and finally give it international luxury flags downtown; none carries a confirmed opening date beyond Crystalbrook Aurora's early 2027 target.

Why Canberra is adding so many hotels at once

Canberra's hotel market has historically been built around government and convention trade rather than tourism, which left the city centre without a genuine international luxury address even as its population and public-service workforce grew. The five projects now underway, three of them in or immediately around Civic, are a coordinated response: Crystalbrook Aurora and the InterContinental/Hotel Indigo pairing are both explicitly framed by their developers as filling that gap, while Manuka Hotel and Canyon Hotel extend the same wave of investment into the capital's inner-south village districts. Together they represent the biggest single expansion of Canberra's hotel stock since the city's original 1920s-30s hotels were built around the Parliamentary Triangle.

The four hotels already open tell a different, more recent story: each opened within a seven-year span (2015-2022) and each targeted a distinct niche rather than competing head-on, Little National's compact-luxury format in Barton, Midnight Hotel's art-forward boutique positioning in Braddon, A by Adina's apartment-style launch on Constitution Avenue and The Sebel Canberra Campbell's longer-stay apartments near the War Memorial. That pattern of niche differentiation, rather than direct competition on room count or rate, looks set to continue with the five confirmed projects still to come.
