The place
Canberra's civic core sits a short walk from Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin, yet has long lacked a true international luxury address. The InterContinental will rise on Binara Street, the current Crowne Plaza Canberra site, as part of the 'One Binara' precinct linking City Walk to Glebe Park.
The concept
InterContinental Canberra is one half of a dual-brand redevelopment that will demolish the existing Crowne Plaza Canberra and replace it with a 14-storey mixed hotel-and-residential precinct, developed by Salter Brothers with Cox Architecture as masterplanner. Announced by IHG in May 2025 as part of a broader Australian luxury push with long-term partner Salter Brothers, the project pairs this flagship with the boutique Hotel Indigo Canberra next door, sharing 530 rooms and roughly 350 residential apartments across two towers. A development application (ACT Planning & Land Authority, #202544692) was still active in early-to-mid 2026, with no demolition or opening date confirmed.

IHG's announcement cites a signature restaurant, a rooftop Club InterContinental Lounge and Suites, extensive conference and event space, and a luxury day spa; no operators, chefs or brand names have been announced yet.
