Coming soon in Hobart

We track six hotels in Hobart: five already open (The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel (2021), Crowne Plaza Hobart (2020), Vibe Hotel Hobart (2020), Mövenpick Hotel Hobart (2021) and DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart (2024)) plus Adina Hobart, an apartment-style property confirmed for October 2026. Visitors focused on Salamanca Market and the waterfront do best near Sullivan's Cove; anyone prioritising rate over location will find several options clustered a few blocks apart in the CBD.

What to do

A weekend in Hobart

Spend Saturday morning at Salamanca Market, one of the largest outdoor markets in Australia with more than 300 stallholders along Salamanca Place's Georgian sandstone warehouses, then walk Battery Point's historic streets just behind it. In the afternoon, follow the waterfront from Sullivan's Cove past Constitution Dock, and in the evening, the restaurants along Elizabeth and Liverpool streets in the CBD cover dinner within walking distance of most of the hotels we track.

A full week

With more time, a day trip to MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art) by ferry up the Derwent River is Hobart's best-known cultural excursion, and Mount Wellington's summit lookout, a short drive from the city, gives a full view back down over the harbour. Port Arthur Historic Site, about 90 minutes southeast, and the Huon Valley's orchards and cider makers both make for a worthwhile day away from the city. Bruny Island, reachable by a short car ferry from Kettering about 45 minutes south of Hobart, adds an oyster farm, cheese producers and a lighthouse walk to a longer itinerary, and the Female Factory Historic Site in South Hobart gives a darker counterpoint to Salamanca's Georgian warehouses for anyone interested in the island's convict history.

Where to stay in Hobart

Sullivan's Cove & Parliament Square

The Tasman, a Luxury Collection Hotel, opened in December 2021 inside Hobart's restored Parliament Square precinct: three connected buildings spanning 1840s Georgian heritage, a 1940s Art Deco former hospital and a contemporary 2021 pavilion, at 12 Murray Street overlooking Sullivan's Cove and a short walk from Salamanca Market. It marked The Luxury Collection's debut in Australia, Marriott's first property of that brand anywhere in the country, and its 152 rooms make it the smallest but most architecturally layered of the six hotels we track here.

The CBD grid

Three hotels sit within a few streets of each other in central Hobart. Crowne Plaza Hobart, a 235-room new-build on Liverpool Street developed by locally owned Kalis Hotel Group, opened in July 2020 as IHG's first Crowne Plaza in Tasmania, with the first Crowne Plaza Club Lounge in the country: designed, its developers say, to feel like a residence within the hotel rather than a standard lounge, with interiors drawing on Tasmanian landscape tones and timber accents nodding to the state's forestry heritage. Mövenpick Hotel Hobart opened in January 2021 on Elizabeth Street in the waterfront precinct, the Swiss brand's first Australian property, with 221 rooms spread across floors three to eighteen and a daily "Chocolate Hour" among its Swiss-heritage touches. DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart, Tasmania's first DoubleTree, opened in October 2024 on Macquarie Street as a ground-up, 206-room build across seven room categories, including 80 deluxe rooms with up to 33 square metres of floor space.

Argyle Street

Vibe Hotel Hobart opened in November 2020 inside a mixed-use tower on Argyle Street developed by Raadas Property and designed by local firm Xsquared Architects, near the waterfront and Salamanca Place and opposite the city's major public and private hospitals: a location aimed as much at government and corporate visitors as leisure travellers, with 142 rooms and suites across ten floors above ground-floor retail. Adina Hobart, a 48-key apartment-hotel confirmed to open in the second half of 2026, is being built on the same site by Chroma Group for developer Raadas Investments, giving TFE Hotels its Tasmanian debut for the Adina brand: every unit will have a full kitchen, interiors drawing on the Tasmanian eucalypt forest in natural timbers and soft green and deep-orange accents, aimed at longer-stay guests over standard hotel-night travellers.

Which hotel for your trip

Heritage & waterfront stays

The Tasman's three-building span of Georgian, Art Deco and contemporary architecture inside Parliament Square, a short walk from Salamanca Market, is Hobart's most distinctive address among hotels already open: its restoration preserved the former St Mary's Hospital building alongside 1840s convict-era stonework, wrapped around a new contemporary pavilion rather than demolishing either older structure.

Business & hospital-district travellers

Vibe Hotel Hobart's Argyle Street position opposite Hobart's public and private hospitals suits medical and corporate visits, and Adina Hobart, once open in late 2026, will add self-contained apartments on the same site for longer stays.

Value-focused central stays

Crowne Plaza Hobart, Mövenpick Hotel Hobart and DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart all sit within Hobart's compact CBD grid, each within walking distance of the waterfront and Salamanca Place at a more moderate rate than The Tasman: all three list opening rates from roughly AUD 150-160 a night, against The Tasman's AUD 280 and DoubleTree's AUD 150.

How Hobart's hotel market changed between 2020 and 2024

Five of the six hotels we track opened within a four-year span, from Crowne Plaza Hobart in July 2020 through DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart in October 2024: a pace of openings unusual for a city Hobart's size, and one that brought four major international brands (IHG, Marriott, Accor and Hilton) into the Tasmanian capital for the first time within a few years of each other. Adina Hobart, confirmed for the second half of 2026, will extend that run into apartment-style accommodation, a format the city had lacked entirely among its newer hotel stock until TFE Hotels' announcement.

Much of that surge tracks back to MONA's 2011 opening on the city's northern fringe, which reset Hobart's profile from a quiet state capital to a genuine cultural-tourism destination and drew a wave of hotel investment that took most of the following decade to materialise. The Tasman's restoration of a heritage Parliament Square precinct, Crowne Plaza's new-build on Liverpool Street and Mövenpick's Elizabeth Street debut all opened within 15 months of each other in 2020-2021, each betting on sustained visitor growth off the back of MONA and the wider Tasmanian tourism boom of the late 2010s.
