Vibe Hotel Hobart

Vibe Hotel Hobart opened in November 2020 at 36 Argyle Street, the first Vibe lifestyle hotel in Tasmania. TFE Hotels operates it. The 142 rooms and suites sit in a 15-storey mixed-use building developed by Raadas Property and designed by the Hobart firm Xsquared Architects.

The place

Argyle Street runs down to Hobart's historic waterfront and Salamanca Place, where the Saturday market takes place. The hotel is also opposite the city's public and private hospitals, so it draws government, corporate and medical visitors as well as leisure guests.

The retail and business centre of the city is a short walk away.

The concept

The building stacks ground-floor retail and hospitality space, four floors of commercial offices and ten floors of hotel rooms. The site has a past that the design refers to: a colonial house from around 1820 stood here, followed in the late 1930s by The Belvedere, an Art Deco dance hall.

The facade uses floor-to-ceiling windows and etched metal panels that pay tribute to that history, and the lobby carries Art Deco touches in green marble, brass trim and fluted columns. The operator says the hotel takes its cues from Tasmania's natural beauty, its history and its reputation as an avant-garde destination.

At opening, the management team was led by general manager Hammond Cardon.

Dining & wellness

The lobby restaurant trades under the name of the old dance hall, The Belvedere, and serves paddock-to-plate dishes. Breakfast is served from 06:30 to 10:30. There is also a bar by the entrance.

The hotel lists a pool, a gym, room service and meeting space for conferences.
