The concept Marriott's Luxury Collection debut in Australia, composed of three connected buildings spanning nearly two centuries of architecture: 1840s Georgian heritage, a 1940s Art Deco structure (the former St Mary's Hospital), and a contemporary 2021 Pavilion addition.

Our take The three-era architectural blend is the real story — a Georgian-to-Art-Deco-to-contemporary span within one hotel is a rarer curatorial feat than the usual single-building heritage conversion.

We have absolutely loved our stay at The Tasman.
We came down to Tasmania for a very special trip and got engaged while we were here, so this holiday is one we’ll never forget. Staying at The Tasman made it even more memorable.
A huge thank you to Charlie, Joshua and Carolyn, along with the rest of the team. Every single staff member we dealt with was friendly, welcoming and genuinely happy to help. Nothing ever seemed like too much trouble, and they all went out of their way to make sure we had a great stay.
The room was beautiful, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. There were so many thoughtful little touches throughout our stay that made us feel really looked after.
It’s hard to put into words how much we appreciated everything the team did for us. You can stay in a nice hotel anywhere, but it’s the people that make you want to come back, and that’s exactly how we feel about The Tasman.
Thank you again to Charlie, Joshua, Carolyn and everyone else who made our stay so special. We left with some amazing memories and will definitely be back the next time we’re in Hobart. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The Tasman to anyone looking for a first-class place to stay.
Christopher Addison · 5/5 Topnotch location, just by the Harbour, next to Salamanca Place. The room, very well appointed Harbour view. Convenience of the guests were truly prioritised. Clean smelling carpet and almost new towels. Fully automated, including the blinds and curtains. Pillows were excellent (duck down)!
Can't fault the service in any way. Will definitely stay again when in Hobart.
The hotel presents itself as a luxury property, obviously the price we paid for the Saturday stay said so, but the overall experience fell somewhat short of that standard.
The room was relatively small. While the bathroom itself was spacious, it lacked features typically expected in luxury hotels, such as a double vanity or a bathtub. Cleanliness also needs improvement — the basin drain area was noticeably dirty, which was disappointing for a hotel positioned at this level.
Breakfast was one of the more positive aspects of the stay, offering a reasonable range of both hot and cold options. The coffee and bakery items were particularly enjoyable.
Service felt uneven. The welcome at the entrance and breakfast service were friendly, but the check-in experience was rather minimal and did not reflect the level of attentiveness one would normally associate with a luxury hotel.
The most noticeable issue during our stay was the shower. Water pressure was quite weak, hot water took a long time to come through, and the temperature never became very hot. While it was manageable during a March stay, unsure if in Tasmania’s colder winter months. In addition, despite the generous bathroom space, there was no practical place outside the shower to hang a towel, making the design feel somewhat poorly considered.
Hardly for me to recommend to my friend or consider re-visit.
I’ve always enjoyed Marriott hotel stays as a Platinum Elite member but staying at the Tasman has exceeded my expectations.
From the checkin staff, to the valet, to the staff that came to check promptly on the room when we enquired about the aircon. Everything was top notch. I was also unwell on the second day with a throat infection and messaged the hotel through the app for extra water bottles, which they not only promptly delivered but also recommended a nearby GP.
Lastly, we enjoyed the breakfast. Coffee and eggs orders were taken at the table, which was efficient. The spread available was modest but sufficient and tasted good. We had really good service on the two days we were there which made our experience that much more comfortable.
Special shoutout to the lady who seems like the supervisor (wearing a green cardigan today). She not only got her hands dirty by clearing plates, while also being attentive to our needs and the other guests needs, but also to her fellow team members as we overheard her offering help and reminding them to be careful of hot items. That was really fantastic and the sign of a great leader which is reflected in how the team member seemed genuinely happy to be working there :)
Thank you to the team for taking care of our bags, retrieving our car from the valet, and loading the car for us upon check out.
Will recommend and definitely stay here again.
The Tasman is amazing, we are very happy here, it's a really nice old heritage hotel. It's in a fantastic location and the view from our room is amazing (check out the timelapse), the food is really good, the staff are really friendly, a special shout out to Emma our super bubbly and friendly breakfast waitress and to Darin who created the most amazing coffee we have had since we have been in Hobart (we are both coffee snobs lol!)!! we both really enjoyed our stay here and we'll definitely stay here again.
