Hyatt's Thompson brand made its Washington debut in January 2020 with an 11-story new build in the Navy Yard's redeveloped Yards district, its rooms facing the Anacostia and Nationals Park. Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group opened its first DC restaurant and rooftop bar alongside it.

The place

The hotel occupies a newly built 11-story tower at 221 Tingey Street SE, in the Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront district that anchors The Yards, the mixed-use redevelopment of a former industrial stretch of the Anacostia waterfront. Rooms and suites face the river or Nationals Park, a few minutes' walk from the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail and a short ride from the National Mall.

The concept

Thompson Washington D.C. is the brand's first hotel in the capital and the first hotel built inside The Yards, the master-planned neighborhood carved out of the old Washington Navy Yard's industrial land along the river. Studios Architecture designed the 11-story building; Parts and Labor Design carried the interiors, working copper, metal and ropework-inspired detailing through the guest rooms as a quiet nod to the site's shipbuilding and dockyard past. The hotel was positioned to serve both the office tenants filling out the surrounding Yards development and leisure travelers drawn to Nationals Park and the riverfront, a market segment with essentially no lifestyle-hotel supply in DC before it opened.

Dining & wellness

Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group opened its first Washington venues here at launch: Maialino Mare, a Roman-style seafood trattoria led by chef Rose Noel, and Anchovy Social, a rooftop bar overlooking the river and ballpark, alongside the Thompson Bar Room off the lobby.
