The Line DC opened in November 2017 inside the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at 1770 Euclid Street NW, completed in 1912. A new mid-rise building behind the church holds the 220 guest rooms; the church itself became the lobby, the dining floor and the event space. The restaurant program has changed hands since opening. Spike Gjerde and Erik Bruner-Yang's original venues have given way to the Fried Rice Collective's No Goodbyes.

The place
The corner of Euclid Street and 18th Street, near Columbia Road, in Adams Morgan, one of Washington's densest strips of bars and restaurants. The surrounding blocks are largely residential.
The concept
The congregation built the church in 1912 as a permanent home. The likely architect was Edwin D. Ryerson, a church member, working with the firm Marsh & Peter. The congregation moved to a smaller building across the street in the late 1970s and the church stood empty. A developer bought it in 2013.
Sydell Group, which also runs Line hotels in Austin and Los Angeles, made this the third in the chain. New York firm INC Architecture & Design kept the facade as it was and added the glassy rear wing. The stained glass, the vaulted mezzanine and the organ pipes stayed; the pipes now form a chandelier, and pews serve as seating.
Dezeen described the furniture as a mix of leather dining chairs, desks that look like a lawyer's office, Moroccan coffee tables and curvy cobalt sofas in the entrance, which the designers called a bipartisan aesthetic. Walls are white, floors are herringbone wood.
In the rooms: a custom brass bed frame and an oak writing desk. Mini libraries are stocked by a local bookshop.
Dining & wellness
Dining is now run by the Fried Rice Collective (chefs Danny Lee and Scott Drewno) as No Goodbyes, a Chesapeake Bay and Mid-Atlantic restaurant, with a bar of the same name. At opening the hotel had four restaurants and cafes: chef Spike Gjerde's A Rake's Progress, Erik Bruner-Yang's Brothers and Sisters and Spoken English. None remain.
The hotel also has a fitness room, a rooftop space and its own radio station.
