Pinnacle International is converting the 25-storey former Toronto Star office tower — vacated in 2022 and once slated for demolition — into a hotel with close to 500 suites, on the south block of its One Yonge waterfront complex. A zoning amendment cleared Community Council in May 2026 and is headed to Council for final confirmation, but no operator, brand or opening date has been announced.

The place

The hotel occupies 1 Yonge Street, the south block of Pinnacle International's One Yonge waterfront complex at the foot of Toronto's harbour, a short walk from Queen's Quay and the Toronto Islands ferry terminal. It sits beside Pinnacle SkyTower, the residential tower at the centre of the same complex, putting the project on one of the most visible sites on the city's redeveloped waterfront.

The concept

Pinnacle International is converting the 25-storey office tower built in 1970 for the Toronto Star — vacated by the newspaper in 2022 and at one point slated for demolition — into a hotel rather than tearing it down. A zoning amendment covering the conversion cleared Toronto and East York Community Council in May 2026, with a condition requiring the developer to widen the Queen Quay East sidewalk, before moving to City Council for final confirmation the following month. No hotel operator or brand has been named; Pinnacle has said repeatedly that it is too early to confirm one. The project is distinct from Le Méridien Toronto Pinnacle Hotel, already announced for the first floors of the neighbouring SkyTower — this conversion is a separate building within the same One Yonge complex. Developer filings put the suite count at 468 in November 2025 and 487 in the city's March 2026 staff report, roughly a third of them extended-stay suites — a program Pinnacle has pitched around a grand lobby and ballroom for events combined with longer-stay inventory aimed at business and relocation travellers.

Dining & wellness

No restaurant, bar or spa operator has been confirmed for the converted tower. Pinnacle's public materials mention only a grand lobby and ballroom as event space; food and beverage concepts will presumably follow once an operator is named.
