The place

The hotel sits at 550 Wellington Street West, in King West Village, a stretch of converted warehouses and fashion showrooms that has become one of Toronto's most walkable nightlife and dining districts. It is within reach of Queen Street West's shops, Trinity Bellwoods Park and the downtown waterfront, and close enough to the Financial District and CN Tower to work for business travel as well as leisure. The address previously housed the Thompson Toronto, and the building's conversion put 1 Hotels into a neighborhood already dense with restaurants and bars rather than a purpose-built tower on the edge of downtown.

The concept

1 Hotel Toronto is operated by SH Hotels & Resorts, the company Barry Sternlicht founded around the 1 Hotels brand and its premise that environmental responsibility and hotel luxury can reinforce each other rather than compete. The property was acquired and redeveloped by Mohari Hospitality, with design led by David Rockwell and the Rockwell Group, and it carries LEED Gold certification along with sustainability measures the brand has made its signature elsewhere: low-energy LED lighting, smart temperature control, an on-site organic composter and the elimination of single-use plastics. Interiors lean on reclaimed and local materials, including timber and driftwood, echoing the brand's language of bringing nature indoors. The hotel counts 112 guest rooms, including 21 suites, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing city and skyline views. Suite options range up to the 1,150-square-foot Willow House and the 2,000-square-foot Birch House, both built around separate living rooms and kitchens or kitchenettes. As Canada's first 1 Hotels property, it extends a portfolio built in Miami, Brooklyn, West Hollywood and San Francisco, targeting guests drawn to design-forward, wellness-minded stays over a more conventional luxury script — a positioning reinforced when the MICHELIN Guide awarded the hotel One MICHELIN Key.

Dining & wellness

The hotel's food and beverage program centers on 1 Kitchen, an all-day restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch built around locally sourced and plant-forward dishes, and Flora Lounge, a lobby bar serving cocktails and small plates — including a charcuterie board sourced entirely within 100 kilometers — alongside live music. On the roof, Harriet's Rooftop pairs a sushi bar and bottle service with an outdoor pool and lounge seating over the King West skyline. Casa Madera, a Mexican-Mediterranean restaurant, joined the lineup after the hotel's opening. Wellness facilities are grouped under The Field House, offering fitness equipment and personal training.
