The place

The hotel sits at the corner of Lake Street and Emerson Avenue in Uptown, a dense residential and retail neighborhood southwest of downtown Minneapolis known for independent restaurants, a summer food-truck scene and an extensive bike-path network: an area that had not seen a new hotel in decades before this one.

The concept

Built from the ground up by Minneapolis-based Graves Hospitality, which also owns the property, the six-story hotel was the 22nd Moxy to open worldwide and only the second built new-construction in the United States. Local firm Collage Architects handled the core and shell, with Yellow Dog Studio designing the interiors around Marriott's design-forward, budget-lifestyle Moxy format: compact tech-enabled rooms paired with an oversized, social ground floor. Artwork sourced through Soo Visual Arts Center and Twin Cities music photography run through the public spaces.

Dining & wellness

There is no traditional front desk or restaurant: guests check in at a central bar and receive a complimentary welcome cocktail made with local Tattersall Distilling spirits. The ground floor includes a Vinyl Listening Lounge with turntables and records for sale, shuffleboard and foosball tables, wood-fired "Moxy Flats" flatbreads, and 24/7 grab-and-go food.

I really like the Moxy brand and the Minneapolis Uptown is no exception. It’s important to know what you’re getting so yes the rooms are small and compact; but that works fine for me. For short trips hanging my clothes on the provided wall pegs was perfectly adequate. A steamer is provided which is infinitely more useful than an old school iron and ironing board. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel decor is cool, beautiful and hip… I love the vibe. The one real standout was the gym, which is actually very big for this type of hotel, and was well equipped. I went in the evening and it was completely empty which was nice. As for downsides … the location isn’t the nicest part of town, I wouldn’t say it’s completely unsafe but a lot of homeless folks which can make you feel less than comfortable.

Rooms were tiny- as in 200 sq/ft. No fridge, no microwave, nothing other than bed and small tv that didn’t work. Don’t bring your kids here, they aren’t welcome. We were threatened immediately about kids having to be with adults at all times. Front desk was so rude we left immediately. Booked for two nights, didn’t get a refund. Leaving was the best decision we made. So uncomfortable to be so unwelcomed. We are super kind and understanding to rules. This is one of the first 1 star reviews I have ever written in my entire life. This was next level hatred. Person at front desk was rude to everyone that walked up. Seemed like they wanted to drink at the bar in peace.

Let me start by saying - I REALLY wanted to like this place. I had heard good things about Moxy hotels and I was looking forward to finally experiencing one for myself. Unfortunately my experience at this location was disappointing to say the very least. It wasn't all bad, as I must say the hotel itself felt clean overall and staff were (for the most part) friendly and helpful. And while I found the gym being in the basement to be a little creepy, the gym itself provided the basics and I was grateful to have that ammenity. Now for the bad... For starters, the parking situation is a nightmare. In short, there is none. Hotel staff advised that my best option was either to pay for street parking or to opt for a paid lot nearby. I ended up finding a side street within walking distance that didn't require payment or a permit (as most did), but it required a bit of a walk to and from the hotel and made transportation of luggage, etc. a nightmare. Now for the rooms. To list what they lacked would be far more lengthy than to list what they provided. My room was little more than a closet, with the bathroom closely matching the room itself in size. There is no fridge or microwave, no table or seating area, no ice bucket, no coffee machine, and no closet space. I did appreciate that they provided body wash and a few other essentials, but I feel that's pretty standard practice. I was staying for a week so I had purchased some groceries, and upon seeing a sign in the lobby mentioning asking for a room with a fridge, I did so. The response I got was something of a disgusted scoff that I would ask such a thing, as that was not something Moxy hotels provides. (I didn't even bother questioning the sign) The neighborhood itself left much to be desired, with many homeless people and other questionable characters lurking. I do know this area is going through a regentrification and this aspect is out of the hotel's hands. Suffice to say, I made the most of my time here but I will not be staying in another Moxy.

Room 201 is One of the absolute worst experiences of my extremely well traveled life.... I live in hotels as I travel nonstop for work. At first glance this hotel looked like something edgy, exciting, new, and even a bit fancy. We got excited to book the room based on the photos. In reality, the rooms are tiny and feature very little in the way of typical even motel amenities; mini fridge, Desk, chair. Something to set your suitcase on, a closet..... microwave? The room was much smaller than the photos led one to believe. The room was right above the lobby and the extremely extremely noisy street outside. Nonstop noise from belligerent drunks after 10pm to early morning. Loud cars, music blaring, motorcycles, you name it. It's awful. Then the lobby itself with a party vibe can also be heard clearly on the 2nd floor.... There's no parking, so don't come here if you have a vehicle. Your only chance to park is blocks away. Also, there's no room service or turn down service. 5 days and no new towels or trash taken out.... Everything about this place just made me say I hate this hotel and regret booking here.

We enjoyed the Moxy Hotel, and overall experience does not deceive. In line with Moxt etiquett. With authentic materials (wood, leather, irons ...etc) and vintage look. Good price / value if you are a Marriot Bonvoy member (yes it is worth it). The rooms are smaller than we expected. No overnight parking in property, you need to walk across the street. We liked it.
