Hilton's compact-room brand picks a former bank headquarters for its Australian debut.

Hilton will bring its compact-room Motto brand to Australia for the first time with Motto by Hilton Sydney City Centre, a 152-room hotel planned for York Street in the CBD, opening in late 2027. The project, designed by Bates Smart inside a former Bank of China building, mixes standard, bunk and flex rooms aimed at younger and group travellers.

The place
The hotel will occupy 39–41 York Street in the Sydney CBD, near Wynyard Park, within walking distance of Circular Quay, The Rocks, Darling Harbour and Barangaroo. The site is the former Bank of China headquarters building, redesigned by Bates Smart, which took its material cues from the masonry tones of the surrounding Wynyard Park buildings.
The concept
Motto by Hilton, the group's compact, communal-living brand, will make its Australian debut here — Hilton's seventh brand in the country — after developer Invictus Property Group secured development consent in October 2024. The 152-room hotel mixes 96 standard rooms with 14 bunk rooms, 14 flex rooms, 20 suites and 56 interconnecting configurations aimed at friend groups and families, built around a lobby doubling as co-working space and a rooftop bar with local programming.
Dining & wellness
Plans include a rooftop bar with communal seating and a lobby that functions as a coffee/cocktail and co-working space; no dedicated restaurant has been announced.
