The concept A new-build, LEED Silver-certified, 32-story tower whose design leans on Texas Hill Country references — a front desk cut to evoke raw gemstones, shou sugi ban charred-wood ceilings, mixed metals and soft leathers set against statement concrete walls sourced with local art and flea-market finds. The hotel was originally targeted for a summer 2021 opening; that slipped, and it opened January 12, 2022.
Dining & wellness The Diner Bar and The Grey Market are led by chefs Mashama Bailey and Johno Morisano of The Grey in Savannah. Wax Myrtle's Club & Pool, a fourth-floor rooftop restaurant and bar with a contemporary American, seasonally driven menu, is the property's signature amenity, alongside a 6,700-square-foot wellness center with a sports simulator and more than 10,000 square feet of event space.
Our take A solid downtown flagship built around a genuine culinary partnership — Mashama Bailey and Johno Morisano's involvement gives the F&B program more credibility than most hotel-branded restaurant tie-ins — even if the tower itself plays it fairly safe architecturally.

During our stay, we were very disappointed with the cleanliness and maintenance of the hotel pool.
The pool had numerous balls of hair floating on the surface, making it feel unsanitary. In addition, used food and drink containers were often left around the pool area for long periods instead of being promptly removed. As a result, trash and debris frequently ended up blowing into the pool.
What concerned us the most happened the following day around noon. While guests, including my child, were actively using the pool, a man who did not appear to be a hotel employee arrived and began pouring a powder directly into the pool. There was no warning, no explanation, and no effort to temporarily close the pool during the maintenance. I understand that pools require regular chemical treatment, but I would expect this to be done before the pool opens or at a time when guests are not swimming. Watching someone add chemicals while children were in the water was concerning and left us questioning the hotel’s pool maintenance and safety procedures.
I hope hotel management takes this feedback seriously. The pool is an important amenity for many families, and better cleanliness, more attentive housekeeping around the pool area, and clearer maintenance procedures would significantly improve the guest experience. I would also appreciate an explanation regarding why pool chemicals were being added while guests were actively using the pool.
Great stay at the hotel using Amex credit and we had our valet, food and bev credits and more. The 4th floor restaurant and pool is a must visit and so relaxing with great city views. And the rooms were comfortable - we slept well despite the hotel being near 6th st (party street). There were complimentary earplugs provided but we didn’t need them. Only downside is there are no doors in the bathroom so the shower was slightly cold but that was a big deal! Great service and food!
I recently stayed at the Thompson Austin and overall had a great experience.
One thing that surprised me is that the Thompson and Tommie Hotels essentially share the same building. When you get off the elevator, it's basically a matter of turning left or right depending on which hotel you're staying in.
The rooms were clean, modern, and well maintained throughout my stay. The location is within walking distance of many restaurants, bars, and attractions downtown, making it easy to explore Austin without constantly needing transportation.
Getting to and from the airport was simple as well. If you're looking to save money, you can take the S20 bus from Austin Bergstrom Airport and walk about two blocks to the hotel. Best $1.25 you’ll ever spend.
The rooftop pool area is beautiful, but be prepared, it gets packed. People claim their spots early and tend to stay there all day, so if lounging by the pool is important to you, get there early.
One food highlight was the pancakes at Fifth Street Diner inside the hotel. They were amazing and easily one of the best breakfasts I had during my trip.
On the other hand, I wasn't particularly impressed with the food at Arriba Abajo. It wasn't bad, but if I hadn't had a dining credit to use, I probably would have chosen to eat elsewhere.
A small downside for me was the shower design. My room had a walk in shower without a door, which constantly let cool air in. It wasn't a dealbreaker, but it did make showers feel a little drafty.
The TVs have Google Cast and plenty of apps available, but the live TV channel selection is pretty limited.
While staying there, I learned about Austin's different entertainment districts….West 6th, Dirty 6th, and East 6th. Dirty 6th is only about a block away from the hotel and tends to attract a younger college crowd. It's lively, but also a bit more reckless and chaotic. If you're choosing the Thompson, that's probably not the atmosphere you're looking for. Fortunately, West 6th is just a short Uber ride away—usually less than 10 minutes and offers a more polished nightlife experience.
Overall, I'd definitely stay at the Thompson Austin again. The location, cleanliness, rooftop amenities, and easy access to the city make it a strong choice for travelers looking for an upscale Austin experience.
My wife and I stayed at the Thompson for a long weekend in Austin. We stayed at a Thompson in Nashville last December and were very impressed with the hotel. We booked this stay through our Amex Card, so we received a room upgrade, which was basically just a room on a higher floor.
The valet workers were very professional each time we had to use the service, and they were quick retrieving our car.
Check-in was fine, and we were offered a bottle of water or a margarita. The hotel is split between two different hotels, both Hyatt properties. There is a coffee shop and a restaurant and bar located off the lobby. There is also a Mexican restaurant located on the 4th floor, which you need to walk through to access the pool. We did not swim, but the pool area looked nice, but the pool was a narrow long pool.
The room we had was laid out in an odd way, with the hallway taking up most of the space. The bathroom entrance was right next to the bed, which was a bit too close for comfort. If you have multiple suitcases, I recommend requesting a second luggage rack as there is nowhere to place a second suitcase other than the floor. The room also had a mini bar with several food and drink options. The minibar fridge was not cold. For ice, you will need to call down and request ice.
The location of the hotel is convenient for getting around Austin, and only a few blocks from 6th Street.
Overall, our stay was fine, but this did not feel up to the level of the Thompson in Nashville and the room layout was not ideal.
This hotel is amazing! It's immaculately decorated, the vibe is very cozy and welcoming, and the staff is extremely polite, professional and accommodating. My stay wasn't as long as I'd like so I didn't get to experience the rooftop terrace or the infinity pool, but I doubt that pool is as amazing as their rainfall showers!! OMG 😲 I would've slept in the shower if I could lol. I'm going back just for the shower. My showers normally take about 20 minutes because I love to be clean and smell good...let's just say I far surpassed my normal time that night. In my defense, it wasn't my fault, they have a folder down shower bench so of course I had to use it 😏 the dim lighting coupled with the perfect water pressure and temperature was so relaxing. I was seriously sad to get out. But when I got in the bed, it felt like I was sleeping on the fluffiest cloud in the sky so my sadness quickly faded into best night of sleep I've ever experienced at a hotel. Yes, I'm definitely staying here again! If you just need a night of solitude and relaxation, you should too!
