The Inn at Green Pastures

The Inn at Green Pastures opened in December 2025 on a historic Bouldin Creek estate whose 1895 farmhouse became Austin's first racially integrated restaurant in 1946. Its new 63-room building, built in an L-shape to save more than 220 heritage oaks, gives the property overnight rooms for the first time, alongside the retained Mattie's restaurant and a new all-day spot, Henry's.

The place

811 West Live Oak Street, in Austin's Bouldin Creek neighborhood, a few blocks from South First Street and South Congress Avenue — a five-to-seven-acre wooded estate that has stayed largely intact even as the surrounding blocks have densified.

The concept

The estate's 1895 Victorian farmhouse, built for Dr. Eugene W. Herndon, became Austin's first racially integrated restaurant in 1946 under Mary Faulk Koock and her husband, and later traded as Mattie's from 2017. This new three-story building — a second phase built in an L-shape specifically to preserve the site's more than 220 heritage live oak trees — gives the estate overnight rooms for the first time in its history, alongside the retained Mattie's restaurant. The interiors mix deep forest greens and browns, custom white oak millwork and steel-and-wood overhangs against the property's older, softer character.

Dining & wellness

Henry's, an all-day bar and restaurant, opened alongside the rooms; Mattie's, the estate's existing restaurant, continues to operate. A private pool offers small-plates service, and a spa is planned for 2028 but not yet open. Event spaces include Marion Hall, the Green Pastures Ballroom and the Caretaker's Cottage.
