citizenM Austin Downtown

citizenM opened its debut Austin property on January 31, 2024, a 17-story, 344-room tower at 617 Colorado Street in the heart of downtown, a few blocks from Lady Bird Lake and the Congress Avenue entertainment strip. It is the Dutch brand's first hotel in Texas and its 34th worldwide, arriving several months later than the 2023 target first announced for the project. The building pairs citizenM's compact, tech-forward room formula with a 16th-floor rooftop pool and bar and artwork commissioned from local and regional artists.

The place

The hotel sits at 617 Colorado Street, on the western edge of downtown Austin, within walking distance of the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail, the Texas State Capitol, and the bars and live-music venues along Congress Avenue and Sixth Street. The address places guests inside Austin's densest concentration of offices, government buildings and entertainment venues, a location suited equally to business travelers and weekend visitors drawn to the city's music and food scene. Downtown Austin has drawn a wave of new hotel openings in recent years, and citizenM's arrival adds a compact, design-led option to a submarket still dominated by larger convention and luxury properties.

The concept

citizenM Austin Downtown is a joint development between the Amsterdam-founded hotel brand and New York-based developer Turnbridge Equities, reported in 2020 municipal filings at a construction cost of around $67 million. Concrete, the Amsterdam design studio behind citizenM's signature look worldwide, served as design architect, with Richmond-based Baskervill as architect of record and Gilbane as general contractor; Denver's Design Workshop handled landscape design. The 17-story tower holds 344 rooms, each fitted with an XL king-size bed, rainfall shower and an iPad that controls blinds, lighting, climate and the in-room entertainment system — the standardized, space-efficient room format that has defined citizenM since its 2008 launch in Amsterdam. The interiors lean on Austin's identity rather than importing a generic version of the brand: public spaces are filled with contemporary art and objects sourced from local artists, an exterior piece by Austin painter Calhan Hale marks the building's street-level presence, and Mexican illustrator Hilda Palafox, working as PONI, designed the rooftop. citizenM is working toward LEED Gold certification for the property, consistent with its sustainability positioning elsewhere in its portfolio. It is the brand's first hotel in Texas and its 34th globally, part of a broader U.S. push that has also brought citizenM to Miami's World Center.

Dining & wellness

Food and drink center on canteenM, the brand's 24/7 bar-and-restaurant concept serving snacks and drinks around the clock, with breakfast available in the lobby for a fee; room service is not offered. Sixteen floors up, cloudM is the hotel's rooftop pool and bar, open daily from noon to 8:30pm to guests 21 and older, with skyline views over downtown Austin and a look overseen by artist Hilda Palafox. A 24-hour gym and a lobby "living room" workspace round out the amenities, following the same all-day, multi-use approach to public space that citizenM uses across its portfolio rather than a dedicated destination restaurant.
