Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin opened in February 2023 on the city's main downtown thoroughfare, a 31-story, 246-room addition to Hyatt's lifestyle brand and the company's second Centric property in Texas. Developed by Colorado-based McWhinney, the hotel pairs a bohemian-chic design nodding to Austin's music scene with a ground-floor restaurant from a James Beard finalist chef.

The place

The hotel sits at 721 Congress Avenue, Austin's central artery linking the Texas Capitol to Lady Bird Lake, in a stretch known for its arts and culture density. It stands beside the historic Paramount Theatre, built in 1915, and the neighboring State Theatre from 1935, placing it inside a corridor of live performance venues, museums, galleries and restaurants rather than the city's newer high-rise clusters. The University of Texas campus and the lake's hike-and-bike trail are both within walking distance, and the address puts guests close to the state government district as well as the entertainment strip that runs south toward Sixth Street. For a brand built around plugging travelers into a neighborhood's culture, downtown Congress Avenue is as literal a fit as Austin offers.

The concept

Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin was developed by McWhinney, with architecture by Nelsen Partners and interiors by UCO Studio. The 31-story tower holds 246 guestrooms, including 5 suites, finished in a modern bohemian aesthetic built around a local art collection, guitar-amp nightstands and vintage concert posters — a direct reference to Austin's self-styled identity as a live-music capital. It is the second Hyatt Centric hotel in Texas, extending a brand positioned for travelers who want a design-forward base for exploring a city's culture rather than a resort experience. Guestrooms are equipped with Drybar hair dryers, Nespresso machines, BeeKind bath amenities and JBL Bluetooth speakers, details aimed at an independent, style-conscious traveler. The property is pet-friendly and includes 2,560 square feet of flexible event space on the third floor, described by the hotel as the "Recording Lounge," plus a 1,400-square-foot penthouse event space on the top floor called the Artist Residence, with panoramic views over downtown Austin — positioning the hotel for small meetings and social events alongside its leisure business.

Dining & wellness

Luminaire, the ground-floor restaurant, is led by chef Steve McHugh, a six-time James Beard Foundation finalist making his Austin debut with a menu built around seasonal Texas ingredients and charcuterie; Executive Chef Greg Driver runs the kitchen day to day. On the eighth floor, Las Bis is a bar and lounge terrace serving conservas, craft cocktails and biodynamic wines. The hotel also operates a 24/7 fitness center with Peloton bikes, including a punching bag installed as a tribute to Austin boxer Matt Martinez.
