The place
The Whitney occupies the corner of Charles and Cambridge Streets, at the foot of the Longfellow Bridge — the literal edge of Beacon Hill, Boston's most tightly preserved historic district. It's a five-minute walk from the Charles River Esplanade and Boston Common, in a neighborhood where new construction of any kind is rare.
The concept
Related Beal bought the site — the historic John Jeffries House, built in 1909 — in 2016 and rebuilt it into a 65-room hotel that opened in June 2019, adding a four-story extension on an adjacent parking lot rather than a full new-build. Local firm Hacin + Associates designed the addition to read as a natural extension of Beacon Hill's red-brick townhouse vocabulary, while Portland-based Ealain Studio handled interiors, working in navy, gray, and black with reclaimed French oak floors. It's named for Henry Melville Whitney, the 19th-century industrialist once associated with the site.
Dining & wellness
Peregrine, the hotel's restaurant, serves coastal-European and New England dishes across a dining room, bar, and garden patio, drawing on the same understated, materials-first sensibility as the rooms upstairs.
